Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is a federal science
agency located in the Washington, D.C. suburbs that conducts world
class research in an incredibly wide range of fields from quantum
physics to fire engineering.
NIST is looking for a Media Relations Director with strong science
writing and editing skills and extensive media contacts who enjoys the
challenge of constantly learning about new areas of science and
technology.
This is the ideal job for an experienced science writer and/or public
affairs professional who has covered the “hard sciences”—physics,
chemistry, materials science, computing, engineering, and mathematics.

NIST.
This position reports to the Director of Public Affairs and serves as
a key senior staff member advising the NIST Director and other NIST
managers in media relations strategy and planning. Duties include
writing and editing news releases about ground breaking science and
engineering taking place in state-of-the-art laboratories, training
scientists and engineers in the joys of plain English, assisting
reporters from CNN to bloggers in covering NIST news, supervising
social media strategy, writing speeches, and serving as an
institutional spokesperson.
Qualifications:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level (ZA
III for NIST employees) serving as a media spokesperson and writing
news materials about research results in the fields of physics,
chemistry, materials science, engineering, or biochemistry in a
journalistic style for variety of non-technical audiences.
Both current federal employees and non-federal employees are eligible
to apply.

Salary range: $89, 033 to $136,771
