Ambassador Lawrence Rossin in Pittsburgh to Offer Next Steps for
Ending Genocide in Darfur
[Pittsburgh, PA] - On July 19th and 20th, 2007, Ambassador (ret.)
Lawrence Rossin, Senior International Coordinator for the national
Save Darfur Coalition, will be in Pittsburgh to speak on ways of
ending the four year old genocidal conflict in Darfur, western Sudan.
Ambassador Rossin has traveled to Sudan twice, and to Egypt, Turkey,
France, Germany, and China to muster international support to resolve
a crisis that since 2003 has claimed as many as 400,000 lives and
driven more than 2.5 million from their homes and villages.
Nominated by former President Bill Clinton, Ambassador Lawrence G.
Rossin served as the United States Ambassador to the Republic of
Croatia from 2001 to 2003. Rossin has also served as Assistant
Secretary General and Principal Deputy Special Representative at the
United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti. Before that, he served
at the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo as well
as on the National Security Staff. In his capacity as Senior
International Coordinator, Rossin oversees the national Save Darfur
Coalition's outreach to international non-governmental organizations
and national governments. On April 11, 2007, Amb. Rossin testified in
front of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee about the crisis in
Darfur.
Ambassador Rossin is appearing in Pittsburgh at the invitation of the
Pittsburgh Darfur Emergency Coalition (PDEC). Other sponsors include
St. Benedict the Moor Parish, Citizens for Global Solutions
Pittsburgh, Black Catholic Ministries of the Diocese of Pittsburgh,
the Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Jewish Committee (AJC),
Acculturation for Justice, Peace and Outreach (AJAPO), and the
Pittsburgh Chapter of the NAACP.
His event schedule is as follows:
Thursday, July 19: Major Public Presentation: "Stopping Genocide in
Darfur." Free to the public. Refreshments. 6 pm. St. Benedict the Moor
Church, 91 Crawford Street at Centre Avenue in the Hill District above
Mellon Arena.
Friday, July 20: Amb. Rossin will discuss the ongoing state divestment
campaign at a 9 AM Breakfast for Pennsylvania Legislators at the
Pittsburgh Chapter of the AJC at 2345 Murray Avenue in Squirrel Hill.
Members of the press are invited to attend. Rossin will speak at a
luncheon hosted by the NAACP for African American community leaders at
CJ's in the Strip District from 12:30-2 PM, and he will attend a
reception celebrating the 60th Anniversary of Citizens for Global
Solutions Pittsburgh at the Sheraton Station Square, 7-9 PM.
PDEC has been leading the local advocacy movement to end genocide in
Darfur, focusing its efforts most recently on targeted divestment of
public funds from international corporations that enable the
government of Sudan to commit genocide. The City of Pittsburgh adopted
targeted Sudan divestment in March of this year, and PDEC just
concluded a petition drive which helped secure near unanimous passage
of the Sudan Divestment Act in the PA House on July 6.
