Dear Friends of PRC,

Good news! An Agreement has been reached between the Pittsburgh Public
Schools and the Education Law Center on behalf of the Somali students
and families resolving the civil rights Complaint filed last year.
This has been a long, slow process, but we have already seen the
District make many changes this year as a result of the Complaint.
With this Agreement, the new Superintendent is promising to do even
more which is a tremendous victory. Nancy Hubley, the Education Law
Center lawyer who represented the families in this case and represents
many families individually as well, has done an outstanding job of
protecting the civil rights of the Somali Bantu students and other
English language learners and refugees. The story of the Agreement and
other background information about the Somali Bantu refugee experience
was covered extensively by the media - on the radio, the TV and in both
local papers. If you missed it, check out these links:

Sincerely,
Khadra Mohammed
