Importance of salah (prayer) according to the Quran and Hadith

Salah (prayer) is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and holds great significance in the life of a practicing Muslim. It is a form of worship and connecting with Allah (God). There are many ahadith that mention the importance and benefits of salah for us as Muslims. The Prophet SAW:

Importance Of Salah According to Hadiths

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

Indeed the first deed by which a servant will be called to account on the Day of Resurrection is his Salat. If it is complete, he is successful and saved, but if it is defective, he has failed and lost…

Jami` at-Tirmidhi 413

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

…So if something is deficient in his obligatory (prayers) then the Lord, Mighty and Sublime says: 'Look! Are there any voluntary (prayers) for my worshipper?' So with them, what was deficient in his obligatory (prayers) will be completed. Then the rest of his deeds will be treated like that."

Jami` at-Tirmidhi 413

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

"Whoever attends Isha (prayer) in congregation, then he has (the reward as if he had) stood half of the night. And whoever prays Isha and Fajr in congregation, then he has (the reward as if he had) spend the entire night standing (in prayer)."

Jami` at-Tirmidhi 221

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

"No Salat is more burdensome to the hypocrites than the Fajr (dawn) prayer and the 'Isha' (night) prayer; and if they knew their merits, they would come to them even if they had to crawl to do so." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Riyad as-Salihin 1073

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

"The Prophet was asked: 'Which deed is the best?' So he said: 'Salat in the beginning of its time.'"

Jami` at-Tirmidhi 170

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "The two Rak'ah before the dawn (Fajr) prayer are better than this world and all it contains." [Muslim]

Riyad as-Salihin 1102

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

Whoever persists in performing twelve Rak’ah from the Sunnah, a house will be built for him in Paradise: four before the Zuhr, two Rak’ah after Zuhr, two Rak’ah after Maghrib, two Rak’ah after the ‘Isha’ and two Rak’ah before Fajr.’ Grade: Hasan (Darussalam)

Sunan Ibn Majah 1140

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

"Whoever observes the practice of performing four Rak'ah before Zuhr prayer and four after the Zuhr prayer, Allah will shield him against the Fire (of Hell). [Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi].

Riyad as-Salihin 1116

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

"The key to Paradise is Salat, and the key to Salat is Wudu'."

Grade: Hasan (Darussalam) Jami` at-Tirmidhi 4

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

"Between disbelief and faith is abandoning the Salat."

Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2618

These hadiths highlight how important it is to perform salah as a fundamental act of worship in Islam. They also remind us of the many spiritual and worldly benefits that come with performing it with sincerity and focus.

Importance Of Salah According to the Quran:

It is mentioned in the Quran:

Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing,...

(Quran, 29:45)

In another place Quran says:

Successful indeed are the believers: those who humble themselves in prayer;

(Quran, 23:1-2)

Here Quran describes believer:

O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allāh is with the patient.

(Quran, 2:153)

These references from the Quran and Hadith underscore the profound importance of Salah in Islam, emphasizing its role as a spiritual practice that fosters a deep connection with Allah and promotes discipline, community, and personal growth among Muslims worldwide.
