In Loving Memory William G. Clements

Obituary

Bill Clements, age 83, died January 9, 2026, in Saint Augustine, Florida. He was born on July 26, 1942, in Taylorville, Illinois, to Myron and Louise Clements. He graduated from the University of Illinois and proudly attended the United States Naval Academy, charting a course early in life toward the skies.

On July 8, 1967, Bill married Kathleen Kay Smith, beginning a partnership that would span 58 years of love, laughter, travel, and shared adventure.

Bill spent 25 years as a Delta Air Lines pilot, a career that suited him perfectly. He loved the view from 35,000 feet and the thrill of soaring the open skies. And even after he retired, he never really stopped moving — he simply traded the cockpit for mountains, rivers, and open water.

Bill was happiest outdoors. He could be found fishing on the Hoback River in Wyoming, casting a line into the ocean off South Florida, or quietly enjoying the sunset while telling a good fish story — or occasionally a very exaggerated one. When he wasn’t near the water, he was in motion somewhere: playing pickleball, skiing, hiking, running, walking the dog, or raiding the kitchen for his favorite snack — Goldfish crackers.

He had a spirit that never seemed to age. Bill was always up for a new adventure, whether it was a trip, a trail, or simply trying something “just to see what happens.” He knew how to have fun, how to make people laugh, and how to turn ordinary days into memorable ones. Those who knew him will remember his energy, his curiosity, and the way he made life feel a little more exciting.

Bill is survived by his wife of 58 years, Kathleen Clements, and their daughter, Wendy Clements. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Clements.

He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who were lucky enough to share part of the adventure with him.

Instead of flowers or donations, remember Bill in your own backyard. Grab a beer, pull up a chair, and tell a Bill story — the better the story, the better the tribute. He would consider that the perfect send-off.
