Obituary : John Jacobs

John Roston Jacobs, known affectionately as Johnny or Jake to family and friends, passed away peacefully on Aug. 27, 2025, at the age of 84. He was born on April 18, 1941, in Andalusia, to the late Carson Alex Jacobs and Jessie Helen Jacobs. At the time of his passing, John was a resident of Dunedin, Fla.

John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He is survived by his beloved wife, Lenore “Nori” Kathleen Jacobs; his children, John Jacobs Jr. (Lori) and Gloria Allison “Allison” Powell (Chuck); his cherished grandchildren, Roston “Ross” Jacobs and Carson Riley Jacobs; and his sister, Gloria Culbreth.

After earning his Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of Alabama, John was commissioned into the United States Air Force. He volunteered to serve in Vietnam, a commitment he was deeply proud of, but before his deployment he was reassigned to Craig Air Force Base in Selma, Alabama, where he served as an instructor pilot. Following his military service, he embarked on a distinguished career as a commercial airline pilot with Northwest Airlines until his retirement.

John had a zest for life that was reflected in his many passions. He and Nori shared a love of sailing, exploring the waters from the Florida Keys to Tampa Bay aboard their succession of boats–Second Star, Patchouli, Sister Moon and Willow. A gifted craftsman, he brought his skill in woodworking, mechanics, and electrical work to every project, whether maintaining his boats or improving his home. He also found joy in riding his Harley Davidson. John and Nori loved traveling in their RV, named “Sally,” embarking on road trips filled with adventure and laughter.  He was a devoted Christian and was active in volunteering at Bell Shoals Church in Apollo Beach, Fla. John was also known for his remarkably wide-ranging knowledge of the world, able to carry on a conversation about virtually any topic, and he shared that gift generously with those around him.

A ceremony to honor John’s life will be held in the coming weeks at Bay Pines National Cemetery in Bay Pines, Fla. He was cremated in accordance with his wishes. The exact date of the service will be announced once finalized.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the hospice program at Bay Pines VA Healthcare System. Contributions should be made payable to “VA Bay Pines Healthcare System,” with a note designating the gift for the hospice program, and mailed to:  Bay Pines VA Healthcare System (135)  P.O. Box 5005,  10000 Bay Pines Boulevard,  Bay Pines, FL 33744.

John’s life was defined by love, devotion, and an endless curiosity about the world. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
