Death in Family: retired DL pilot Capt. Bob Gaines, age 72

We have received word of the passing of retired DL pilot Capt. Bob
Gaines. Born June 8, 1938, Capt. Gaines was 72 years of age at the
time of his passing April 20, 2011. Bob hired on with Delta Air Lines
06-02-1969.
Survived by his wife Alice, personal condolences may be sent to the

Mark,

This is notify you to alert the Delta family and friends of the
passing of Robert E. "Bob" Gaines of Jasper, Georgia.

Bob was a retired Delta pilot (I believe he retired in 1996?) and was
a very active builder and restorer of antique gliders. His
craftsmanship and restorations are works of art! Bob was a former
USAF B-47 pilot, a Vietnam veteran and a Delta Airlines Instructor
Pilot. He was active in the Soaring Society of America, Vintage
Sailplane Association and former president of the National Soaring
Museum at Elmira, New York.
Bob was very well known, respected and admired by glider pilots around
the world. I was honored to be a friend of this kind, gentle and
generous man.

He is survived by his wife, Alice a retired Delta Flight Attendant,
son Paul and daughter Jeanette.

The Gaines family has asked that, in lieu of flowers and such,
donations be made to the “Robert Gaines Museum Expansion Fund” at the
address below. Expansion of the National Soaring Museum was a special
interest and commitment of Bob's. Please send a note with your check
that it is in memory of Bob.
