To: PCN Subject: More on Jack

Am very saddened to hear of the passing of Retired Capt. Jack Bishop.
I
Had been the most junior pilot based in Memphis since I was assigned
there
In Feb. 1959. Jack was one of 5 pilots junior to me that were finally
sent
To MEM in late 1961. He used to tell people that he thought I must be
gay
Because I was so happy to have people junior to me that I ran up and
kissed
Him (not true!) However, I learned an interesting anecdote about his
Navy
Flight training.

Jack was well over 6 feet tall, and was playing basketball at one of
the
Colleges in Oregon. After one of the games, the team went out to have
a
Couple of beers, and were joined by a friend of a teammate. This
friend
Happened to be a recruiter for the NAVCAD (Naval Aviation Candidate)
Program. Jack mentioned that he had tried to get into the USAF Cadet
Program, but was told that he was too tall. The Navy recruiter asked
if he
Would like to get into the NAVCAD program. Jack said that he figured
if he
Was too tall for the Air Force, he would probably be too tall for the
Navy.
The recruiter told him that he had a friend in the Sick Bay (Medical
Dept.)
At Pensacola, and he could arrange for Jack to be measured in at the
maximum
Height, and the he could "grow" all he wanted. So that is what
happened,
The Corpsman falsified Jack's true height, and he did become a
NavCad.

Many NavCad's would request a Marine Corp Commission because that
usually
Increased their chances of getting assigned jets. Jack did that, too.
He
Was set up for Jet Fighter training, went through ground school and
the
Ejection seat training for the TV (the Navy version of the T-33). When
the
Day came for his first flight in the TV, he and the instructor went
through
The checklist, taxied out to the runway, did the Before Take-off check
list.
He was cleared for Take Off, and the Instructor told him to close the
Canopy. When the canopy came down, it hit Jack's helmet, and shoved
his
Chin down into his chest. He told me that when he looked up as far as
he
Could, he could just see the bottom of the Glare Shield. They opened
the
Canopy and taxied back to the Flight Line, and Jack was reassigned to
Transports. In his USMC career, he flew the R5D (C-54). Among his
Delta
Friends he became affectionately known as The Jolly Green Giant. He
was low
Keyed, but quite a humorous fellow. I am very sorry to hear of his
passing.
