Weight of wings

Evening all,

I just had a knee replacement a couple of days ago, my second knee, and I asked my Doctor how much weight I could lift and how soon.  I was thinking about the wing weight and he asked how much they weigh and I guessed maybe 175 lbs. each.  Of course your only lifting one end or the other at a time so you might be lifting half that weight.  Has anyone ever weighed a wing by itself?  I'm concerned that my surgeon will tell me wait for three months or more which will kill my soaring season.

On the PIK20E wing I measured the force to lift each end a few years ago:  54 lbs on the wing end and 88 lbs on the wing root.

My thoughts would consider a one man rigging gear either from IMI or SOARINGXX and consider either mechanical or electric (yes more but good very good) 

You can never put a price on your back - the money is well spent. If you injure your back you may have to stop flying. It is a one off Insursnce policy to protect you back (or new knee) 

It is over 50 years since Australia got rid of "lbs", "miles", "feet" and degrees F (the latter means nothing to the rest of the world except people Burma!! )

My 1977 PIK-20B fiberglass wings weigh 77.7 kg total (171 lbs).   48.6 kg (107 lbs) at spar end, 29.0 kg (64 lbs) at wing tip.   

I have an IMI One Man Rigger and last week used it to rig the PIK by all by myself.   It's a great back saver and allows careful and cautious wing placement instead of groaning, cursing and worrying you might drop it when rotating wing flat for insertion.  Well worth the cost.  

Two riggings ago I also added a small positional ramp/shim at the left side of fuselage to align the first spar with the second root.   Once the first wing is in place and on the wing stand, I temporarily place two strips of tape on the right root, so it won't slide back out when the second (left) wing is inserted.   Then when the second wing is aligned the two wings marry together easily with no significant force on the persuader handle.

I should have added that my PIK-20B wing weights included the orange mid-wing trailer dolly, which stays in place until the controls are connected.

FWIW, I was having back problems from lifting the tail onto the tow out dolly. It’s a bloody heavy empennage, especially when the engine is stowed.
I made up a small lifting device from a car scissor jack and a small timber and webbing cradle to lift the tail boom. I operate the jack with a cordless drill that remains attached.
