You are invited to participate in a national conference, “Democratic
Education in the Spirit of John Dewey,” celebrating the 150th birthday
of noted education philosopher John Dewey, in Chapel Hill, N.C., Sept.
24-26, 2009. The conference is hosted by the School of Education at
the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Keynote speakers are Nel Noddings, professor emerita at Stanford
University, and Larry Hickman, director of the Center for Dewey
Studies
(U.S.A.) and professor at Southern Illinois University. The conference
will include workshops, project presentations and papers on democratic
education, as well as social occasions to provide opportunities for
participants to become acquainted.

Following the conference, the South Atlantic Philosophy of Education
Society (SAPES) will hold its annual meeting in Chapel Hill, with the
theme of “Democracy and Schooling.” In addition to session
presentations, the SAPES meeting will feature a keynote dialogue
between Kathy Hytten, professor at Southern Illinois University and
alumna of the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Education, and George Noblit,
professor at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Education, on “Critical
Education in a Post-Dewey Era.”

The event will include a lecture and reception honoring Samuel Holton,
professor emeritus at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Education and a
longtime supporter of SAPES.

Teachers, graduate students, faculty, school district personnel,
community representatives and others interested in democratic
education
are encouraged to attend both the Dewey conference and the SAPES
annual
meeting.

All are invited to apply to present sessions, panels, discussions,
posters, displays or demonstrations highlighting contemporary efforts
in democratic education. Apply to present a session by Aug. 1 for the
SAPES annual meeting, Aug. 20 for the Dewey conference.

Register to attend by Sept. 10; separate registrations are required
for
the two events. Participants can earn CEUs. Visit us online:
