Dear Philly-region DH friends,

The WORD LAB text analysis learning group at the Penn Libraries, which I run with Scott Enderle, is going to start meeting again on 1/24/20. We will be moving to Fridays 12-1:30pm this year instead of Thursdays due to some scheduling issues, and will usually still be meeting in 623 Van Pelt (Vitale II in the Kislak Center).

Today, I'd like to draw your attention to a presentation we're having on 1/31, by Mike Williams, who is Penn Libraries' coordinator of area studies technical services. He will demo and explain his recent work using Google Sheets to do some really advanced data scraping (via querying/scraping web sites in an automated way), then cleaning/processing and exporting the results to create bibliographic records and do other acquisitions tasks. This may sound like specialized library work and it is, but the methods themselves are hardly limited to library tech services, and are doing some really powerful things all within a spreadsheet with no programming involved.

If Mike's topic sounds like something you could use in your work, or you know others not on this list who might be interested, please share my announcement and come to room **242** in Van Pelt Library from 12-1:30pm on 1/31! (This is the only room change for spring 2020) Below is an event link, but no RSVP is necessary. If you don't have a Penn Card, just bring a photo ID to enter the library. But do note that we are meeting in a room that is not lunch-friendly this day, sorry.

I hope to see some of you there! Of course, you can view all of our sessions at https://w0rdlab.org too.

Molly
