to Philosophy of Physics Discussion Club
Dear friends,

Please note the following events of interest:

1. Next week's seminar of the Astrophysics Research center of the Open University  (ARCO) will host Niels Martens (Philosophy of Astronomy & Cosmology Research Group, Utrecht University) as an online speaker. The talk is scheduled to Monday April 15th, 14:30. Full details and zoom link are down below.

2. The second mini-workshop of our philosophy of physics discussion club will take place on Thursday, June 20th, 14:00-18:00 at the Open University of Israel.
Avi Levy (University of Haifa): On Hidden Variable Models of Relativistic Quantum Theories
Aviram Rosochotsky (Tel-Aviv University): Spatial Relationism in General Relativity
Guy Hetzroni (The Open University of Israel): How to choose a heuristic framework? Gauge invariance vs. gauge-symmetry breaking in particle physics
Full  details will be sent in due course.

Looking forward to seeing you there,
Guy.

ARCO Seminar : Monday, 15/04, 14:30

Dear all,

Next week's seminar will take place on Monday the 15th of April at 14:30 (please note the earlier time), Israeli time. We will be welcoming Dr. Niels Martens from Utrecht University as an online speaker. The seminar will be preceded by a lunch at 13:00 in the meeting room.

Title:
Social science & humanities contributions to the next generation Event Horizon Telescope collaboration

Abstract:
In 2019, the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration released the first ever image of a black hole, created from data collected by using a virtual, Earth-sized telescope comprising dishes on six sites dispersed across the globe. The Next Generation Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration (ngEHT) aims to increase the number of sites to ~20, and to record high quality black hole videos. The History Philosophy Culture Working Group (HPC) constitutes one of its 11 working groups, consisting primarily of scholars from the humanities and social sciences, thereby providing an unprecedented opportunity for these fields to contribute in real-time to a large (astro)physics collaboration. The HPC has prioritised four topical areas of contribution: 1) Responsible telescope siting, 2) Algorithms, Inference & Visualization, 3) Foundations, 4) Collaborations. This talk will focus on collaborations: governance structure & social epistemology of science (= the study of knowledge formation in scientific collaborations).

This talk explores the following four topics within the context of the ngEHT collaboration, from the perspectives of social studies of knowledge formation and the philosophy of scientific practice: 1) governance and team structures, 2) consensus vs. dissenting opinions, 3) a forecasting tournament, and 4) authorship practices.
