Subject: RE: pools/response to Assembly meeting
Well well well...
is it any surprise that mayor Begich accused another Assembly person of a
"political speech" when the Assemblyman addressed the ridiculous cost of the
$37,000 city hall sign! Shall we just call it for what it really
was...Begich was offended that someone DARE criticize his beloved WASTE of
taxpayers dollars for a ridiculously expensive and unnecessary electronic
bulletin board! By the way, was there a public debate about this
expenditure? Spending that same amount of money on a lifeguard would provide
more opportunity for increased usage which in turn generates revenue to help
with overall operating costs!
I agree with the fact that the pools are already a FIXED cost in the
community with lights, heat, etc.....I see no reason for the pools to be
closed all day while schools are in session. (I believe this to be true,
correct me if I am wrong) Because the schools were originally part of ASD,
the taxpayers have already paid for these pools many times over, so open
them up so that revenues can be generated through more public access.
The last person tried to equate the pools on the same level as Little
League. I don't really see Little League as a life skill but learning to
swim is (survival skill). Then, he goes on to talk about why should taxpayer
dollars be used to operate pools for a "select" group. What a ridiculous
comment that was! HELLO! We as taxpayers have already paid for these pools!
And, what about all the homeschooling families and senior citizens that pay
for public schools to the tune at least 50% of taxpayer dollars! Maybe we
should consider them a "select" group and we shouldn't have to pay for
schools since we don't use them.
Using his "logic", we could sell advertising to fund the schools!
Also, then why don't the "select" people at Goose Lake and other swimming
areas pay for the use of those facilities (Begich brought it up, not me!)
which are only open approximately 3 months per year. The pools are available
12 out of 12 months!
Is there any COMMON sense left anywhere in this community!? Please support
our POOLS! We have already paid for them, now let us USE them!
I know this is a different Parks and Rec budget than Eagle River but it is
still a community concern. I do not want to risk our wonderful community
pool falling into the same "logic" (or LACK of!) I also would like to see
our Chugiak pool available more often than it is.
Thank you Debbie for all your continued support and hard work! You are a
great asset to our community!
