Penn Pakistan Society Newsletter

Edition 2 February 15th, 2016

Ladies and gentlemen, PPS is back with your weekly round up of all the news coming out of Pakistan. There's always something crazy going on in the land of the pure, and so, in light of it being Valentine's Day, let's start with this:

1. Pakistan's President Condemns St. Valentine's Day
(http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-35570606) (http://blogs.wsj.com/indiarealtime/2016/02/14/pakistans-president-says-valentines-day-celebrations-should-be-avoided/)

Many factions in Pakistan have described Valentine's day as an intolerable festival of obscenity, a day that threatens to impugn traditional concepts of marriage. Our beloved President Mamnoon Hussain (yes I am showing him love even though he doesn't want it on this auspicious day, because PPS loves all!) has said that Valentine's Day is a Western tradition that contradicts our traditional Muslim values.

An interesting statement, that raises an interesting set of questions. Does the government have the right to determine what is part of Pakistan culture or not? Can a district in Northern Pakistan, impose a unilateral ban on Valentine's day? Can competing ideas of what Pakistani culture means be allowed to exist in Pakistan or are we destined to have a singular conception of Pakistan identity? After all while the Jamaat-e-Islami takes out rallies against this immoral day (not like there aren't other problems to be occupied with in the country, *cough* lack of basic access to medical services, education *cough*), people like Sabeen Mahmud argued in favor of letting people celebrate the day. (http://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/the-life-and-death-of-sabeen-mahmud)

The question I submit to you tonight, ladies and gentlemen is, can we have a pluralistic Pakistan or should our government demand the utmost conformity to their views?

2.  LOL  (Wahab Riaz and Ahmad Shehzad fight it out in PSL)

3. An interesting editorial in Dawn on Madrassah reform:

Alright folks, we'll be back next week with more interesting news from Pakistan. Till next time, stay crazy!

Penn Pakistan Goes Bowling!

A huge thanks to everyone that joined us at Lucky Strike and made our event a success, we hope you all had as much fun as we did! Photos are online now! Check them out here!

Penn Pakistan Society Newsletter

Edition 3 February 22nd, 2016

Hey everybody, PPS is back with another round up about news in Pakistan and an overview about what to expect this week. First and foremost, we are back with our Discussion Series! After talks about Pakistani identity, terrorism with Jibran Nasir and much more, we're welcoming Ahsan Iqbal (WG'86) back to campus. Meanwhile, back in Pakistan there are a few who made us proud this week.

A Talk with Ahsan Iqbal

Saturday, February 27th.
JMHH: Room TBA
Time: 1-2:30PM

Let's (attempt to) be serious for a moment, while I get official announcements out of the way.

Ahsan Iqbal is coming to campus, get pumped! In our talk with him, we aim on having a discussion on the current and future projects of the Ministry of Planning, Development & Reform, the idea behind Vision 2025, and where the government stands on its development goals at the half way mark of its tenure. The discussion will also broach the subject of the recently inaugurated CPEC, its ramifications on Pakistan's relationship with China, and the challenges that the Federal Government is facing in terms of balancing the interests of the various stakeholders involved (including the provincial governments).

This event is open to all, invite friends you think are interested! Please RSVP  here Non Penn students/visitors MUST fill out this form so that they may be allowed to attend.
If you have any questions you'd like us to ask Ahsan Iqbal, please fill out  this form.

Now, back to the important things in life: chai and samosas will be served.

News from the land of the Pure

1. Update: Despite President Mamnoon's wishes, Pakistan celebrated V-Day anyway (article linked)!

2. Some of us aren't lazy. So that's good.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy got nominated for another Academy Award for Best Documentary (Short Subject) for A Girl In The River (trailer linked), a documentary on a girl who survived an attempted honour killing. We hope she emerges victorious at the end of this week like she did back in 2012 - mostly so we can claim that we're related or something and get credit ("Ya bro Sharmeen's my mother's cousin's husband's sister's cat's original owner. Obviously we're tight").

Sharmeen on her motivations in filmmaking.

That being said, the golden statue barely does justice to her commitment, which is to something larger than herself and the film industry. Unlike most of us who sit at home and rant about what's wrong with Pakistan (although, to be fair, that can be a lot of fun too), Sharmeen has continued to bring the plight of women in Pakistan into the limelight. She has dragged out abominable issues such as female infanticide, acid attacks and honour killings from under the carpet and plastered them on screens across the world. Some have criticized her documentaries and speeches for tarnishing the reputation of Pakistan. Um the idiot meter on this one is about to break because we reallyyyy doubt the country's reputation can get worse - trust us, munni badnam hui was actually written as an ode to Pakistan. (Still not sure who the wretched darling is but first guess: it's Bilawal)

3. Speaking of not being lazy, shoutout to Nergis Mavalvala: The Karachiite who went on to detect Einstein's Gravitational Waves (article linked)

Karachi-born (note: you can already tell this particular news segment was written by a Karachiite on board, I'd like to poke in and say Lahore Lahore hai) quantum astrophysicist Nergis Mavalvala, Associate Department Head of Physics at MIT is a member of the team of scientists that announced on Thursday (February 11th) the scientific milestone of detecting gravitational waves, ripples in space and time hypothesized by physicist Albert Einstein a century ago. *insert cheers*

4. A few words of optimism:

Following the optimistic trend of this edition, we'll leave you with this thought:

Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can. (That's from Arthur Ashe, not me).

With revolutionary fervor, I say, Pakistanis of the world: unite! Unite against the government's malfeasance. Unite against intolerance and injustice!

aaj bazaar main pa bajolan chalo
let us walk in the bazaar in shackles
Chashm-e-nam, jaan-e-shoreeda kafi nahin
wet eyes and restless soul is not enough

aaj bazaar main pa-bajolan chalo
let us walk in the bazaar in shackles

Rakht-e-dil bandh lo, dil figaro chalo
get ready for the journey of heart, go wounded heart

Phir hameen qatl ho aain yaro chalo
let me go to be executed

Woah, that was a lot of news (and I actually cut it down). Don't worry, we won't hold back on you, you'll get more next week and since Karachi and Lahore references were made, shoutout to all the cities you guys are from! We'll be back next Monday with more news to brighten up your day. Cya on Saturday at 1PM sharp and make sure to tune in to the Pak vs India cricket match the same day. Pakistan Zindabad!

Penn Pakistan Society Newsletter

Edition 4 February 29th, 2016

Alright ladies and gentlemen, we're back with your weekly fix of all things Pakistan. But before we get to that, February 29th? Really? I'm not sure how comfortable I feel about leap days, they just sneak up on you and make you realize four years went by and you're still in the same place: studying at 4 AM. I don't know about you guys but I find that slightly concerning. And if you're not studying right now, congratulations, that's the good life. Anywayyyss, we have lots of news from Pakistan to round up for you guys so let's get to it!

A Talk with Ahsan Iqbal

A huge thanks to everyone who attended! We hoped you gained from this experience and got all your questions and queries about development projects in Pakistan answered. It really was heartwarming to see so many people interested in the future of Pakistan.

News from the land of the Pure

A great article (above linked) by Professor Humeira Iqtidar of King's College London on how Pakistan's Federally Administered Tribal Areas are treated as legally and politically separate from the rest of Pakistan and is subject to serious misconceptions.

Mumtaz Qadri was hanged to death in Pakistan today. The sentence was announced by an Anti-Terrorism Court 4 years ago and it was upheld by the Supreme Court back in October. The fact that his plea for mercy was rejected by the President and he was hung today is an even bolder step on the state's part given the sensitivity of the subject and the track record of public backlash. It has crucial implications for the discourse surrounding both vigilante justice and the blasphemy law - most importantly, it formally confirms that criticism of Pakistan's blasphemy law itself is not blasphemy.

Just to refresh your memory and provide some more context, Qadri fatally shot Salman Taseer - then Governor of Punjab - in 2011 justifying the assassination by citing Taseer's criticism of Pakistan's blasphemy law and his support of a Christian woman (Aasia Bibi) accused of blasphemy.

Pakistan's blasphemy law has been the cause of much controversy in the past few years. Here is a series of informative articles written by Arafat Mazhar if you are interested in learning more about the blasphemy law and some arguments for reforming it.

3. Guess who won two Oscars tonight? Yup, we did!

Pakistan has not one, but two (debatably three, but we'll get to that) Oscar winners to be proud of today! As referenced in the newsletter last week Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy was nominated for another Academy Award for Best Documentary (Short Subject) for A Girl In The River (trailer linked), a documentary on a girl who survived an attempted honour killing.

Asif Kapadia (yup, he's the one on the Oscars snap story caught snapchatting the crowd, dude's cool), a British-Pakistani filmmaker won the Oscar for 'Best Documentary - Feature' for his film Amy (trailer linked), which is a portrait of the life and career of British singer/songwriter Amy Winehouse.  They both won just a few hours ago so now we can safely claim that we're related to them ("Ya bro Sharmeen/Asif's my..." You all know the drill, you've all done it before.)

4. This is not a drill. We repeat: THIS IS NOT A DRILL.

Fawad Khan is back with another Bollywood movie and because it's FAWAD KHAN, we suggest you remember to BREATHE.

Okay tbh, we're actually over the whole craze (like ya Fawad you're hot and talented. We all get it) but, you know, you have to pretend and go with the flow. It's like rooting for Leo to win an Oscar every year and whining on Facebook when he doesn't, even though you never saw the film... Although we didn't have to whine tonight because *drumroll please* Leo finally won his Oscar! (Yup, he's the third winner we're proud of, mostly because we didn't have to reuse the same hashtags for the sixth time.)

Check out the trailer for Kapoor & Sons (because come on, why wouldn't you?) right here!

That's all we've got for the next two weeks guys. Yes, you read that right, two weeks because SPRING BREAK starts Friday! (Thursday, for those of you who did college right and planned your schedule that way) So you won't be hearing from us next week. :( Trust me, it pains us (I'm genuinely kind of sad) knowing we won't be able to brighten up your Monday morning, but you guys will all be back home/on vacation and PPS wishes you have loads of fun! Good luck with your remaining midterms, have a great break and we will see you all soon! Pakistan Zindabad!
