Knights of the Thistle

The King has appointed Sir Jim McDonald and Sir James  MacMillan  as Knights of the Thistle continuing the trend not to appoint hereditary peers to the Garter and Thistle. Baroness Grainger is to be Usher of the Green Rod.

Sir James MacMillan is a Roman Catholic quite unusual for members of the order of the Thistle

A quick look at the 16 members who are not part of the Royal Family shows only 2 hereditary peers: the 11th Earl of Elgin and Kincardine, who 102 years old, and the 10th Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry.

As recently as the 1970s both the fourteenth Duke of Hamilton and his brother the Earl of Selkirk were Knights of the Thistle though not at the same time

There is now only one Knight of the Thistle appointed before the millennium the Earl of Elgin and Kincardine at 102 years appointed in 1981
