Henry Michael Gunning
February 6, 1949 - December 26, 2020

It is with a great sense of loss that we announce the death of Henry Gunning at the age of 71, drilling manager for Africa Onshore Oil ltd on contract to Fortesa in Senegal. He succumbed on December 26, 2020 after a week in hospital in Dakar suffering from extensive burns incurred while attempting to control a gas well blowout in Ngadiaga, Senegal.

He was predeceased by his mother, father, aunt Jo, sisters Marion and Elaine, and most recently, his brother Charles. He leaves with many loving memories, his wife, Rokhaya, and extended family; his sister Sautie, and six brothers John, Joseph, David (Claudette), Bernard (Libby), Peter (Pauline), and Simon. He is deeply mourned by his family: Holly (Peter) and Melanie (Nick) from his marriage to Rita, and Charleen, Jack and Robin from his marriage to Kathy. He will be sadly missed by his five grandchildren, James (Sarina) and Hannah Uri, and Ruby, Jeannie and Mae Mardon as well as his many nieces, nephews, Godchildren, and his friends across continents.

Henry was born in Peace River, Alberta on September 6, 1949, to Sir Robert Gunning, 8th Baronet and Ann, Lady Gunning (née Hallett), who had emigrated to Canada from England. Educated locally, Henry attended Fairview College, before starting work in the newly booming Albertan oil industry.

He worked and lived across the UK and raised his five children mainly in Stonehaven, Scotland and Alton, England before spending his later years in Thies, Senegal. He leaves them with many happy memories and the knowledge that whether he was near or far, they were always loved.

The funeral service will be held on Monday 15th February at 1300 GMT West Herts Crematorium, England. Although current covid-19 restrictions limit the numbers who can attend the service in person it will be possible to join by livestream. A gathering to Celebrate Henry's Life will be held at a later date after covid restrictions ease at St Mary Magdalene Church in Horton, Northamptonshire, England where his parents, aunt and sister are interred.

Please contact (email removed) for details of either event.
In lieu of flowers, the family would be happy for any commemorative donations be made to https://www.msf.org/donate

As stated he was the son of Sir Robert Charles GUNNING, 8th Baronet (1901 - 1989) and Helen Nancy (Ann) HALLETT (died ? - not shown living in DB 2008). He was a younger brother of the 9th and 10th baronets.

His 3rd marriage to Rokhaya (of Senegal?) is not recorded in DB 2008.
