pyvery brought something up in a recent post on the Kershaw Hereditary Peers list, and I'm hoping one of our fellow group members might be able to confirm his information.

His post, as well as a previous one done some time ago by Patricia, mentioned a possible heir to the Marquess of Bute.

At the time, Wikipedia did include a notation that there was a son, John, styled Earl of Dumfries, born to the Marquess in 2024, but there was a missing citation.

Now, thanks to pyvery's post bringing attention to this matter once again, as well as Patricia noting the GRO index had now been updated to include 2024, I checked the GRO index.

What I found was a birth for "John Zhisen CRICHTON-STUART" in Q4/2024 in Kensington and Chelsea.

Can anyone confirm that this birth is that of the new Earl of Dumfries?

Thanks.

Brooke

I noticed this Brooke, but no spouse's name. The entry  in Who's Who 2026 for the Marquess of Bute has not been updated for several years, so no help there

Hi Patricia.

I thought this might be the case.  I'm just going to throw this out there, but I'm sure you've already checked his instagram account?

Hi Booke,

I just found this article in Daily Mail about the colorful Crichton-Stuart family:

However, it states that John Bryson Crichton-Stuart, 8th Marquess of Bute, or Jack Dumfries, as he prefers to be called is a bachelor, who lives with his two dogs.

So, if even if he has a son, this son is likely born outside a marriage, and this son will therefore not inherit any titles or be known officially as the Earl of Dumfries (except his parents gets married).

Best regards,
Nick

Hi Nick.

Great link-- thanks.  And it's from Nov. of last year, so it  was published after the would- be "heir" was  born, if the son had been in wedlock.

My guess, unless there is information to the contrary, that you might be right-- that, if anything, this possible son was born outside of wedlock.  We will see if anything further turns up.

Thanks again!

Brooke

Brooke,
Just a reminder that this is a Scottish title, and you do not have to be born in wedlock to succeed. You can succeed if you are legitimated by your parents subsequent marriage.
I think this first came to light with Viscount Drumlanrig who was illegitimate at birth but whom the Lord Lyon subsequently ruled was legitimated by his parent’s marriage.Interestingly though,he has yet to succeed to the title as his father is still alive.

Hi malcolm.

You make a very good point.  The questions that remain are whether or not there is actually a child, and if so, will the parents marry.  Time will tell.

Brooke
