Quite a moment with Viscount Stansgate returning to the Lords.

His father, Tony Benn, inherited the Viscountcy in 1960 as 2nd Viscount, which disqualified him from the Commons.  He ran to replace himself, won, was disqualified again, and then caused the law to be changed such that he could disclaim his peerage in order to rejoin his Commons, and he generally campaigned to abolish the House of Lords.

On his death in 2014 not only did his son not disclaim the title, but he entered the Lords as an excepted hereditary in 2021. And not only once has he entered the House, but he now twice as he returns to the Lords with a life peerage.

His father must be spinning!

Would anyone happen to know why the Duke of Wellington chose Colmonell as part of his territorial designation? He has been created Baron Wellington of Stratfield Saye, of Stratfield Saye in the County of Hampshire and of Colmonell in the County of Ayrshire. As per Beamish's site.

I believe the peers give life peerages are ministers in Lords and so they are given a life peerage as otherwise the work of Lords would have to be halted. If someone knows differently then i am happy to be corrected

Patricia, how could they carry out the House of Lords work anyway since their right to sit has been removed? The only way they could carry out ministerial work is if they were made life peers.

I think an example is David Cameron. He was appointed as foreign secretary on 13 Nov 2023. He was later made a life peer as Baron Cameron of Chipping Norton on 17 Nov 2023 in order to have representation in Parliament, since he had already retired from Parliament long ago as an MP.
