She was the daughter of Jacqueline de Rothschild and cellist Gregor Piatigorsky and the niece of Baron Guy de Rothschild. Survivors: husband Daniel Drachman, M.D., sons Jonathan, Evan and Eric Drachman, five grandchildren, brother Joram Piatigorsky.

Lady Rothschild, who has died aged 84, was the wife of the financier Jacob Rothschild, the 4th Lord Rothschild, and a noted owner and breeder of thoroughbred racehorses.

In 1988 her husband inherited the Waddesdon Estate, in Buckinghamshire, from his cousin James de Rothschild’s widow, Dorothy. Serena Rothschild, in whose life horses had always played an important part, took over the supervision of the Waddesdon Stud, which had been established in 1924 by James de Rothschild.

Lady Rothschild was born Serena Mary Dunn on April 28 1934, the daughter of Philip Dunn and his wife Lady Mary (née St Clair-Erskine). Her paternal grandfather was Sir James Dunn, Bt, the Canadian steel magnate. Her father, who settled in England, inherited the baronetcy on Sir James’s death in 1956.

Serena and her younger sister Nell (who was later to win acclaim as the author of Up the Junction and Poor Cow) grew up in comfort in London and at Stowell Park, their father’s house and estate near Pewsey in Wiltshire. Their parents divorced in 1944, but 25 years later remarried, Sir Philip having never ceased to adore Lady Mary.

Brought up Catholic, Serena was educated at St Mary’s, Ascot. At home at Stowell – except for a period during the war when she and her sister were sent to live with their grandfather in Canada – she enjoyed a country life with horses and dogs, and from a young age took a keen interest in the estate farms.

She married Jacob Rothschild in 1961. They had four children, three girls and a boy, and lived between a house in London and Stowell Park, which in 1976 Serena Rothschild inherited from her father. Later, they had also the Pavilion at Eythrope on the Waddesdon Estate and a spacious holiday house on the Greek island of Corfu.

She was a supporter of various charitable organisations, including the Wiltshire Blind Association, which she served as a vice-president.

Lady Rothschild is survived by her husband and four children.

Sorry to branch off from the main focus of the thread, but given the detailed Rothschild pedigree provided above- did anyone manage to find Baron Robert Rothschild (1911-1998), who married Mary (1925-2017), dau. of Sir Reginald Aylmer Ranfurly Plunkett-Ernle-Erle-Drax (1880-1967) of the Barons Dunsany? *

Biographical sources gave his parents as Bernard Rothschild and Marianne (née van Rynveld), and he was meant to be a descendant of Moses Rothschild, brother of Mayer Amschel Rothschild (and therefore, based on the pedigree provided by Mr Said-Vassallo above, son of Amschel Moses Rothschild and Schonche Lechnich), but I never managed to find a published source aside from 'Le Sang de Rothschild by Joseph Valynseele and Henri-Claude Mars (thanks to Dennis Cunniff who found that Bernard features on p. 503 of that volume- sadly I don't have it) that gave any real information.

A look at what's online re: the descendants of Moses Rothschild shows two sons, Jonas Moses and Yechiel/ Jehiel Moses; the issue of the former didn't seem to yield anything, but Yechiel/ Jehiel apparently died aged 57, so could have married and had issue; the source (a user-generated genealogy) gave no further information on him.

The Rothschild barony is one that is not in immediate danger, but over the next few decades, faces extinction.

Lady Rothschild's widower, Lord Rothschild turns 83 this year.  

The heir apparent, Lord and Lady Rothschild's only son, Nat (b. 1971), turns 48 this year.  He had no children from an early first marriage, and has no children from his current marriage.

The only other male in remainder, James (son of Lord Rothschild's half-brother, the late Amschel) turns 34 this year.  Married since 2015 to Nikki Hilton, the couple has produced 2 daughters to date.

It looks like Baron Robert was a descendant of Moses, brother of Mayer Amschel (father of the 5 brothers).

As a result, you wouldn't find him on a genealogy that shows the descendants of Mayer Amschel, but would need an expanded Rothschild family tree.

Such a family tree may exist, but I haven't come across it.
