The site is working, but there is a problem with one of the most important features, which has gone on for at least a couple of days.

A researcher used to be able to  directly access information about a peer (Duke, Marquess, Earl, etc.) but just clicking on the Custom Index, going to that rank, and then finding the title, and clicking on the person you are looking for.

Now, when you go to the Custom Index and click on the rank, a complete blank comes up.  (You can find the person you are looking for by searching the surname, but the other way is much faster.)

Does anyone know what's going on?

Thanks.

Is anyone else finding that the website is down a lot, lately? Not just with this feature but in general. I am getting a lot of 'this site can't be reached' messages.

Yes, it has happened to me a couple of times.

The site regularly has problems but seems to 'right' itself later in the day (not yet, today!). My guess is this site is now so large and frequently used that managing it (including generating income from ads) must be a major task. It's a very useful resource which is free (so far), so I hope it doesn't disappear altogether. The owner ?Darryll Lundy is to be applauded for his Herculean efforts in producing such a website. I use it in the same way I use Wikipedia, ie useful to go to as a starter, but try to verify it's dates etc from other sources. This doesn't take away from the creator's work: how can one person defiinitively check all the info appearing on it?

With Paul's site no longer online, thepeerage.com and genealogics.org have become more important than ever for our research.

I find errors of omission on the Peerage site much more commonly than errors of commission. Much of the data is copied across from pedigrees in Burke’s volumes, which as we know are often incomplete.

Nick, I agree with you.

There are usually footnotes with each piece of information, so you can see where it comes from, and then make your evaluation whether it's from a credible source.  (I have found most of the sources are extremely credible.)

Hi Brooke,

On Wayback Machine, I can find can Paul Theroff's Gotha's main page here:

If some pages under this site on Wayback Machine does not exist or work, then try to select a different page date.

Also, according to his page was made and / or it then was stored on Wayback Machine, it sometimes takes a little time for it to load.

If nothing happens or it comes with an error, then you could try to reload the page. Sometimes that works and the page then loads up.

😀

Best regards, Nick
