I find it doubly odd why join a group on peerage and the aristocracy when you detest the very proceedings of it?

Longtime reader and seldom contributor her.

I actually find the above user, Sven, really off putting to this Google group. He's been given countless warning about his behaviour and language in the past, and his only contributions are coming here to rant as if it's a Twitter feed.

This seems to be totally at odds to the purpose of this group, and runs contrary to the spirit and efforts of other members.

Why on earth has this troll not been banned by now?

I think Richard's preference has been to encourage self moderation amongst posters.  My own personal view is that banning should be a last resort.

I have emailed Sven privately a few times to encourage him to modify some of posting habits by avoiding pejorative language.  It's fine after all to disagree with the creation of a(nother) glut of life peerage creations.  With a life peerage or Bishopric being the only ways into the Lords now, I worry that the House of Lords is now entirely vulnerable to the patronage of the Prime Minister of the day, and I worry that creating peers seemingly without limit could damage the Constitution.  But to call it "disgusting" isn't necessary and lowers the tone of discussion as mentioned by jks.

It would have been helpful if Sven had cited a source for the future 28 peers - I cannot find anything with a cursory look.  If the creations are simply to add to the Labour benches as "lobby fodder" then its a worry, but if they are for people with expertise in specialist fields who can contribute to debate in the Lords then I am much more comfortable.  More detail might have helped us to have a real discussion, rather than what sadly was a pejorative post where no-one wants to engage the actual topic directly, and instead we're into a discussion of what to do about the poster.

Having watched Sven's posting for a while he tends only to post on the more political aspects of the peerage, namely the House of Lords itself, the removal of hereditary peers from the House and life peerages.  I think this is legitimately within the scope of the group, even if he takes a viewpoint different to most other posters on some issues.  What is regrettable is that he cannot find a way to disagree a bit more agreeably.

I'm shocked to read this comments. I'm not a troll and I don't let anyone call me that. I'm interested in british history and politics. As part of it the peerage. But that concept is contradicting modern life and democracy
and should not have a place in the modern world. And so yes I'm disgusted by that senseless appointments. It's shocking that your archaic views let you to bad behaviour against me. I'm having another opinion but you should be resepctful.

There is a Telegraph article, from a few days ago, with the title "Starmer considers appointing 19 allies to Lords in final act as Prime Minister."

Any former labour MPs likely in the list?

Thanks Brooke - I found https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2026/07/09/keir-starmer-u-turn-labour-resignation-honours-list-peers/
The article explicitly refers to 19 peerages (not 28) - I could not find any named person in the article as being likely to receive a peerage, so not news there.

Sven - I searched a couple of places on wikipedia, but found nothing.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prime_Minister%27s_Resignation_Honours seemed the obvious place given your post, but it refers to past lists.

Sven - you have a right to be disgusted, but please try to consider the custom and practice of most of the discussions on this group - do you actually need to tell us about your disgust?  We tend to be factual and disagree agreeably.  Your problem with these possible appointments as you have articulated is well understood (and perhaps even shared by some), but stick to that as your disgust isn't going to stop them happening.

Hi Henry.

You're right--  the article mentions the possibility of 19 peerages created, but no specific names.

I'm guessing we''ll here more about this in the coming days and weeks.
