In February 1954 she married Lord Grimthorpe...The wedding was a grand affair that was held at the Queen’s Chapel at Marlborough Gate in London by special permission of the Queen. The reception was at St James’s Palace and attended by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, Princess Margaret and the Duchess of Gloucester.
Her husband predeceased her ... and she is survived by their three children. Teddy, the 5th Baron Grimthorpe, is the racing manager of Juddmonte Farms, owned by Prince Khalid Abdullah of Saudi Arabia; Ralph, known as Danny, is an investment manager who was for 18 years a partner and director of trading at Crispin Odey’s hedge fund; Harriet is an interior designer. The family lived near Malton in North Yorkshire.
In 1973 Lady Grimthorpe was appointed lady of the bedchamber to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, a position she held until the Queen Mother’s death in 2002. She was in her element, on hand at formal and social occasions, helping with the Queen Mother’s correspondence and looking after her at public engagements. After the Queen Mother’s death, she batted away inquiries when contacted by hopeful journalists, historians and royal biographers. She would answer the phone to all callers and say: “I’m terribly sorry, but Lady Grimthorpe is away at the moment. Goodbye.” Asked once by her family what she missed the most about her role, she said: “Oh, the laughs.” Elizabeth Lumley was born in 1925.
...Her mother was Katharine McEwen, whose cousin was the painter and sculptor Rory McEwen.
