NEWBURG--Andre Walter
George. 1928-2018. Andre (Andy) Newburg, 90, died at home in London, UK on September 16, 2018. He was born in Berlin, Germany. In 1933 he and his parents left Berlin for Amsterdam. In 1939 they immigrated to New York. He graduated from Harvard College (1948) and Harvard Law School (1952), serving one year in U.S. Army Intelligence. He joined the New York law firm Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton in 1952 and spent his career at Cleary until 1990, when he became General Counsel for the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in London. Fluent in Russian, German, Dutch, French, and English, Andy was an avid sailor and skier. He married Elsie Vanderbilt in 1953, with whom he had four children; they divorced in 1996. In 1997, he married Susan Baring. He is survived by his wife, Sue, his children, Michael Newburg, Anne Newburg, Daniel (Anna Smith) Newburg, and Thomas (Catherine Featherston) Newburg; his grandchildren Jane Wasserman, Hugo Wasserman, Alexander Newburg, Phebe Newburg, William Newburg, Andre Newburg, Sarah Newburg.
Elsie Vanderbilt, daughter of William Henry Vanderbilt III (1901 – 1981) and his 2nd wife Anne Gordon Colby (1909 –1974), married 2nd M. Bernard Aidinoff (1929–2016).
