While doing the genealogies of the Earls of Pembroke and Montgomery, Earls of Carnarvon and Earls of Powis, I just found out how richly represented the family is in the peerage and baronetage (I will do the Barons Herbert at a later stage).

A certain Welshmen named Sir William ap Thomas (d 1445) was father of William “Black William” Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke (1468), among the first Welshmen to be granted a peerage. His son and heir, William, 2nd Earl of Pembroke later resigned the title to Edward IV and was instead known as Earl of Huntingdon (July 1479). He dspm 1491, when the title became extinct, but his daughter and heiress, Elizabeth, become 3rd Baroness Herbert suo jure (so created by writ of summons for her grandfather on 26 July 1461) and married Charles Somerset, 1st Earl of Worcester. His descendants were later Dukes of Beaufort. The Barony of Herbert today is held by David John Seyfried-Herbert, 19th Baron Herbert (b 1952), in whose favour the abeyance was terminated in 2002, the title having become abeyant since 1984 upon the death of the 10th Duke of Beaufort and 18th Baron Herbert.

William, 1st Earl of Pembroke also had several illegitimate children, among whom was Sir Richard Herbert, courtier to Henry VII (d 1510). His younger son was William Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke (1551). The aforesaid William’s younger son was Hon Sir Edward, of Powis Castle (d 1595), who was father of William Herbert, 1st Baron Powis (1629). His son and heir, Percy, was created vp Bt, of Powis Castle (1622) before succeeding his father. Percy was succeeded by his son and heir, William, 3rd Baron Powis, who was later created Marquess of Powis (24 March 1686/87). This William had Jacobite sympathies and was created titular Duke of Powis and Marquess of Montgomery (12 Jan 1688/89) by James II after his exile. His grandson was William,3rd Marquess of Powis, upon whose death unmarried all the peerages became extinct in March 1747/48. His younger brother was Lord Edward (d 1734), who had a posthumous daughter, Barbara (d 1786), who married Henry Arthur Herbert, 1st Earl of Powis (1748 creation, more on him below).

Back to the Earls of Pembroke. William, 1st Earl of Pembroke had two sons, William, later 3rd Earl of Pembroke and Philip. The younger Philip was made Earl of Montgomery (1605). He would succeed as 4th Earl of Pembroke upon the death of his elder brother sp in 1630, thus uniting the two titles. Philip’s son and heir was Philip, later 5th Earl of Pembroke and 2nd Earl of Montgomery (d 1669) and was father of Philip, 7th Earl of Pembroke/4th Earl of Montgomery and Thomas, 8th Earl of Pembroke/5th Earl of Montgomery.

The aforesaid Thomas, 8th Earl of Pembroke had a fourth and younger son, Maj-Gen Hon William Herbert MP (d 1757), who had among other issue, Henry Herbert, later 1st Earl of Carnarvon (1793). To note, the present Earl of Carnarvon was heir presumptive to the Earl of Pembroke and Montgomery, until the latter had a son and heir born in 2012 and another in 2014. Earl of Pembroke Montgomery and Carnarvon is rather long and 3 Welsh counties to boot should that ever happen!

Back to William “Black William” Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke. His younger brother was Sir Richard Herbert, of Coldbrooke Park, near Abergavenny (d 1469 at Battle of Edgcote as a Yorkist). His g-g-grands was Edward Herbert, 1st Baron Herbert of Chirbury (1629) also Baron Herbert of Castle Island [I] (1642), the noted Deist and writer. His grandson was Henry, 4th Baron Herbert, upon whose death both peerages became extinct in 1691.

A younger son of Edward, 1st Baron Herbert of Chirbury was Sir Henry Herbert, courtier to James I, Charles I and Charles II. By his second wife, he was father of Henry Herbert, 1st Baron Herbert of Chirbury (1694). His son and heir was Henry, 2nd Baron Herbert of Chirbury, upon whose death the peerage became extinct in 1738.

Back again, the father of Edward, 1st Baron Herbert of Chirbury (1629) was Richard Herbert, of Llysmawr/Llyssin. His younger brother was Matthew Herbert (d 1611). He was father of Francis Herbert, of Dolguog, Machynlleth, Montgomeryshire, who was father of Sir Matthew, 1st and last Bt, of Bromfield, Shropshire (1660; became extinct upon his death in 1668/69) and Richard Herbert (d 1676), who married Florentia, sis of Henry, 4th Baron Herbert of Chirbury and 4th Baron Herbert of Castle Island as above. His son and heir was Francis Herbert, of Dolguog (d 1719), who was given properties by his paternal uncle, Henry Herbert, 4th Baron Herbert of Chirbury aforesaid. His son and heir in turn was Henry Arthur Herbert, 1st Earl of Powis (1748). This Henry married Barbara, posthumous niece of the 3rd Marquess of Powis as noted above. He was succeeded by his only son and heir, George Edward Henry Arthur Herbert, 2nd Earl of Powis, who d 1801, when all the peerages became extinct. His sister, Lady Henrietta Antonia (d 1830) would go on to marry Edward Clive, 2nd Earl of Powis.

Back to Matthew Herbert (d 1611). His younger brother was Charles Herbert, who was thus grandfather of Arthur Herbert, 1st Earl of Torrington (1689), the noted naval solider, his peerages becoming extinct upon his death in 1716.

We go once again back to the Earls of Pembroke and Montgomery line. George Herbert, 11th Earl of Pembroke and 8th Earl of Montgomery was father by his second wife of Hon Sidney, who was created Baron Herbert of Lea (1861). His son and heir was George, later 2nd Baron Herbert of Lea and who also succeeded his uncle as 13th Earl of Pembroke and 10th Earl of Montgomery in 1862. The aforesaid George, 13th Earl of Pembroke/2nd Baron Herbert of Lea also had a younger brother, Hon Sir Michael Herbert KCMG, a diplomat (d 1903), whose son and heir was Sir Sidney Herbert, 1st Bt, of Boyton, Wiltshire (1936), though this became extinct upon his death unmarried in 1939, when his estates passed to his cousins, Hon Sir George Sidney Herbert, 1st Bt, of Wilton and Hon Sidney Charles Herbert, 16th Earl of Pembroke and 13th Earl of Montgomery. The aforesaid cousin, Sir George Sidney Herbert, 1st Bt, of Wilton (1927) was next younger brother of Reginald, 15th Earl of Pembroke.

Back to the connection with the present Earls of Powis. Robert Clive, AKA “Clive of India” had a very successful career with the HEIC and was created Baron Clive of Plassey [I] in 1762 (commemorating his victory at Battle of Plassey). His son and heir was Edward Clive, later 1st Earl of Powis (1804), who married the previously noted Lady Henrietta Antonia, sister and heiress of George Edward Henry Arthur Herbert, 2nd Earl of Powis as above.

I would have added the narrative genealogy in full, but that is already over 50 pages long at this point combined for the 3 main titles holders.

As well there were a couple separate lines who became barons in the Germanic states, and in the UK there was a Jacobite dukedom.
