William Amherst Vanderbilt Cecil died on 31 October 2017.  He was a scion of the Barons Amherst of Hackney being the younger son of Hon John Francis Amherst Cecil (1890 - 1954) 3rd son of Mary Rothes Margaret Cecil OBE, Baroness Amherst of Hackney (2nd in line) and of Cornelia Stuyvesant Vanderbilt (1900 - 1976) daughter of George W Vanderbilt of the USA

He was b 1928 and m 1957 Mary Lee (Mimi) Ryan of New York (a cousin of the late Jackie Bouvier Kennedy) and has issue living William Amherst Vanderbilt Cecil b 1958 and an adopted daughter Diana Marshall Ryan Cecil b 1957 and adopted 1972

He was the owner,until he transferred control to his son, of the Biltmore estate near Asheville in North Carolina,usually said to be America's largest house.

            The 11th Duke and Bill Cecil were 2nd cousins once removed.

  The common ancestor is William Henry Vanderbilt son of the "Commodore".Consuelo,Duchess of Marlborough was his granddaughter and she was the grandmother of the 11th Duke.George Washington Vanderbilt was the youngest son of William Henry and Bill Cecil is his grandson.

Especially as he was descended from some of the ur-families of New York. His ancestors included Peter Stuyvesant and Robert Livingston the Elder.  (And a Schuyler sister, though not one of those made famous by Hamilton 🙂 )
