This title has passed through females several times now. The original family seem to have assumed the surname Sutherland at about the same time they obtained that earldom. From 1535 the title passed to the Gordon family (though like most of the Gordons they were actually Setons in the male line), and they kept the surname Gordon for a few generations.

Is the Countess of Mar now the only female titleholder in her own right above a barony/lordship?

Thanks.

Furthermore on the question of Mar, the next 2 in direct succession are women, daughter and a granddaughter.  Those of you who have the latest copy 'of the good book' to quote Richard,  perhaps you can look up how near another female is in succeeding to a Scottish earldom?

Finally on this point, Arlington would do the trick, if the Committee of Privileges finally got their act together and terminated the abeyance of the earldom,  relying on the precedence of Cromartie, instead of being such sticks in the mud.

Unless something has changed recently, the Heir Presumptive to the Earl of Rothes is his brother, aged 47, who has no children. The next heir is his aunt Jean (b.1927), followed by the daughters of his aunt Evelyn.
