I hope Beckham gets the Knighthood, truelly deserved in comparison to his support for England and the Olympics particularly.
Maybe a life time Barony in the near future too !!.

It seems according to Daily Mail that David Beckham is to be Knighted.. I wish that the King creates a Baronetcy for David Beckham.. Rich enough to be a landed gentry.

The King does not create these, Honours committees of independent experts set out who can be put in line for an honour. Baronetcies are not offered or on the table as they are heritable. Whether he receives an ordinary Knight bachelorhood, like most people, or a higher honour is up to those committees.

maltagenealogy,

I could understand a knighthood.  He is certainly deserving of that.  But a life barony or baronetcy?

As Peter so eloquently put it, a baronetcy is out of the question.

And in my opinion, as far as a life barony, for someone who is in the entertainment/sports field, I can think of several people off the top of my head who would be more worthy-- Dame Judi Dench, Dame Helen Mirren, and Sir Paul McCartney.

They have all made contributions to England and to the world longer than David Beckham has been alive.

With the complete abolishment of the rights of hereditary Lords being in the House of Lord's imminent. I feel there is an opportunity to use hereditary peerages to honour people rather than bloating the House of Lords with Life Peers. eg Sir David Attenborough becomes Viscount Attenborough. Likewise with Baronetcies. Life Peerages have become almost tainted by the ill appointments of successful Prime Ministers.

We ought to remember  that many persons who were formally knighted now receive peerages.Do they really deserve that recognition?
Leslie Pine said that the principle of hereditary peerage was that a man’s service to his country was so significant that his male issue should be recognised ad infinitum.
In practice it was never thus. There are more notable Englishman in history that never received a title(Shakespeare,Cook,Faraday,Newton etc) than those who did(Marlborough,Nelson,Wellington etc).

Many Life Peerages are given just to give so the ruling party can have a voting edge in the Lords.

If they will be removing all  hereditary peers from the HoL, will there still be a need to even award "life peerages?"

Life Peerages and being a Archbishop/Bishop (Church of England) will become the only ways to become a member of the House of Lords. Once the Hereditary peers lose the 90 spaces given via the By election system. Also the Earl Marshal and Lord Great Chamberlain will also lose their right to a seat in the Lords. The appointment of Law Lords (Created under the Appellate Jurisdiction Act 1876) ended with the passing of the Constitutional Reform Act 2005, which created the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom.

Sir David Attenborough has already refused a peerage because of his late brother. The only peerages offered nowadays are life baronies. Shakespeare was made an armiger, he had his coat of arms officially created by the College of Heralds. There are many instances of certain individuals who refused peerages for reasons other than not agreeing with the concept. Both of my grandfathers were put forward for peerages, both mentioned in Hansards, but both refused as a matter of principle. One of my great great grandfathers was offered a peerage three times (again Hansards), but refused due to his political career and his distaste of the process, but he did accede to a baronetcy - it did not stop his many daughters from marrying into the peerage, or his sons marrying sprigs of the same!

Would that baronetcy be Tate? He refused a Peerage thrice.
