He was s of Norman Vansittart BOWATER 1862-1934 (s of William Vansittart BOWATER 1838-1907 who was also f of Maj Sir Frank Henry BOWATER 1 Bt 1866-1947) and his 2 w Jessie Faithfull FRAMPTON 1900-89 (having m second 1948 as his 2 w her nephew by marriage Sir Thomas Bowater 3 Bt dspm 1972). He m 1955 Joan Edith 1929-2017 d of Joseph HUGHES of Osterley, Middx and had three sons and a dau.
