Lord Laming's contribution to the Lords went FAR beyond - and was much more significant than - his speeches and votes. He was Convenor of the Crossbench peers for 4 years and Chairman of Committees - a big job - after that. He served on nearly 20 committees in his time, the last couple of which he only gave up this year. A crossbench peer I know says he was perhaps the kindest and most helpful person he met when he arrived was trying the work out now best to contribute. He was one of the best examples in recent years of those who make a great contribution, despite speaking in the chamber relatively rarely.
