A look at the Stearns family, mainly undertaken because of the address of Arthur Stearns: Bridget Stearns (presumably Bridget Charlotte as above given following information) b. 1959, mother 'King'; there is a 1950 marriage between Frederick Arthur Stearns and Phyllis Esther, dau. of Robert George King. Frederick's father is given as Edmund Stearns, and his address as 10, Coopers Close, Chigwell Row, which is in Chigwell, Essex.

The 1985 death record of Frederick A. Stearns (b. 1924) at Norwich Outer, Norfolk is matched by a probate record of that year, providing his address as 'Ranworth House, 23, Redenhall Street, Harleston, Norfolk'.

The 1924 birth record of Frederick A. Stearns at Alton, Hants. gives mother's surname as 'Deadman'; there is a 1920 marriage record for Edmund Stearns and Lily E. Deadman at Wandsworth. There is only one death record for an Edmund Stearns, b. 1893, d. 1941 at Epping, Essex, which is presumably the above man.

He appears in the 1901 census at Acton, Sudbury, Suffolk alongside his parents, William (b. 1855), a 'farmer', and Ellen H. ('Harriet' per other census records) Stearns.  I couldn't locate a marriage record for William and Ellen Harriet Stearns. William Stearns, born at Acton, appears in previous census records, with his wife, as an agricultural labourer. In the 1911 census appears a William Stearns b. 1854, farm labourer, of Heath Road Cottages, Acton, and wife Sarah and son John (b. 1888); I thought this indicated a remarriage for Edmund's father, but a William Stearns b. 1836 at Acton appears with wife Sarah in the 1881 census, which rather muddies the waters. At any rate the 1908 death record at Sudbury of a William Stearns b. 1855 would appear to be the man in question, with the other William, husband of Sarah, quite separate (leaving aside the inconsistency of birth year).
