I usually only check this group first thing each morning, when I post BMDs from the Times & Telegraph, so have only now seen this post.
I regularly attend the IHR's lectures and had booked for this one which I attended in person.
It was a fascinating talk full of things of interest to this group but, sadly, I didn't take notes! He said the full article of c10,000 words would eventually appear in print (didn't say where, but mabe the Bulletin of the IHR?). His talk last night was c5,000 words which meant he didn't have time to include what sounds like a fascinating section on peers who included foreign designations in their titles. Interestingly, the country is often consulted before the title is agreed. Although he mentioned one instance of Baroness Ryder of Warsaw 1924-2000, cr 1979 (of Warsaw in Poland and of Cavendish in
the County of Suffolk - '
a personal tribute to the people of Poland' ODNB).
The form was for a peer-designate to meet Garter and discuss their preferred style before anything is agreed. But Sue Ryder (as she was) pre-empted this by phoning the Polish Ambassador stating her wish. He consulted the (then Communist) Polish govt who were delighted to agree to it, impressed that they would have a 'Polish title' in the British House of Lords. Garter was none too pleased, but could hardly oppose the fait accompli!
Hopefully it won't be too long before the full article appears in print somewhere.
