Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of
things not seen. Indeed, by faith our ancestors received
approval. By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by
the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are
not visible.
Hebrews 11:1-3
What faith is not – faith is not agreeing to a set of doctrines or
teachings about God. Faith is not having the correct teachings or
doctrines about God. Faith is not something we do to please God.
“Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things
not seen” Faith is how the salvation Christ won for the WHOLE WORLD
on the cross becomes “for me”.
Faith is trusting that God loves us. Faith is trusting that God is in
control and that evil does not have the last word. Faith trusts God
completely. Faith is what God has given us, Faith is not what we
give God. Faith is for our sake so that we might live free, joyful
and generous lives. Faith is for our sake so that trusting God’s
forgiveness and love, we may love and forgive others. Faith is for
our sake so that we may trust God’s mercy and justice so that we need
not be burdened by judging others.
Gracious loving God, thank you for the gift of faith. Give me grace
today to lean on that faith you have given me. Amen.
