Rex Gentium King of Gentiles
And he shall judge the Gentiles, and rebuke many people: and they
shall turn their swords into plow shares, and their spears into
sickles: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall
they be exercised any more to war. Isaiah 2:4
Today’s antiphon is a prayer for Jesus to return as the King of all
peoples – Gentiles and Jews. With one king we are united as God’s
people, all of us made by the same God out of the same earth. When
Christ gathers us all together, there will be no more war.
The dream of worldwide peace has yet to be fulfilled but what if we
were to recognize that our enemies were created by God? What if we
were to remember that those with whom we are estranged, those with
whom we are angry, those we look down upon and with suspicion are also
made by God of the same clay with which we were fashioned? If we
cannot yet achieve world peace, can we not pray for peace among those
around us?
"O King whom all the peoples desire, you are the cornerstone which
makes all one. O come and save humankind whom you made from clay."
O come, Desire of nations, bind,
In one the hearts of all mankind;
Bid Thou our sad divisions cease,
And be Thyself our King of peace.
