Today’s commemoration reminds us there is a creation beyond what we
can see and hear – there are beings created by God who serve and
praise God beyond space and time.
Angels are spiritual beings with no physical body. They are separate
beings that humans. Despite popular culture, movies and stories,
human beings do not become angels after death. Jesus speaks of angels
watching over children (Matt 18:10) and rejoicing over repentant
sinners (Luke 15:10)

Michael is the arch angel motioned in the books of Daniel, Jude and in
revelation he is in charge of the angels who defeat Satan and throw
him out of heaven . As such he is traditionally seen and portrayed as
the guardian of the church and protector of Christians against the
devil and the one who accompanies believers who have died into
heaven.

This commemoration invites us to give thanks for the many ways God
looks over us, both directly and through his angels. It brings to
mind the evening prayer of Martin Luther

"I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son,
that You have graciously kept me this day; and I pray that You would
forgive me all my sins where I have done wrong, and graciouly keep me
this night. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul,
and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the wicked foe
may have no power over me. Amen.
