[Passport] chainplate deck sealant

I bought Sikaflex 291 LOT through Wesr Marine and brought it down to
seal my chain plates at my deck,with the teak removed. Many people
suggest 292. I can't get 292 in Mexico at all. Is 291 sufficient or
will I be wasting my time and causing potential for leaks if I use the
291?

I don´t think you´ll be wasting your time. 292 is
the right stuff for sealing the chainplates, but
the 291 is a good multi-purpose sealant. It looks
as though it´s not as elastic as the 292 and
doesn´t bond as strongly, though, but that could
be a comparison between "plenty good enough" and "huge overkill."

I couldn´t decrypt the technical data in the
Sikaflex Marine Handbook sufficiently to compare
the two products´ ability to bond to stainless
steel, which is where polyurethane sealants
typically fail. My guess is that 291 won´t bond
quite as well as the 292 to the polished 316L,
which is what I have after replacing the
chainplates a few years ago (separate long story).

292 isn´t available in Ecuador either. A Sika
engineer I talked to agreed that 292 is optimal
for sealing and adhering to wood, fiberglass,
gelcoat, and stainless steel in a marine
environment and said 221 is the best I´m going to
find here. He described it as "just the same as
292 but just a little less UV resistant." So if
221 is OK, I´d think 291 would be better still.

Still, I´ve resigned myself to sealing the
chainplates with 221 then as soon as I can get
292 digging it all out and doing it again with
the Right Stuff. Maybe I´ll get lucky and find
someone flying down here to visit or crew on
another boat who can bring me a few cartridges
before I sail outta here in Nov/Dec.
