Neither I nor my highly skilled Mexican technicians can find, anywhere
in La Paz, new water seals for my engine fresh water pump. We rebuilt
the shaft, installed a new oil seal on it, and put it back on to find
it still leaks a bit. Hopefully the stop leak stuff I poured in will
stop the leaking at least for long enough for me to get to Puerto
Vallarta. It's not the pump to engine gasket that's the problem, but
the seal that goes on the shaft to hold the engine water in.

Anyhow, I'm wondering if anybody knows anything about the history of
these water pumps, if they have been replaced or superseded by newer
models not listed in my Mercedes Service Manual, or where to get the
parts for the water seal, or anything at all that will be helpful or
that will make me feel better in the "misery loves company" sort of
way. Are there any old Nanni engine fresh water pumps laying around
out there?

Thanks.

Ian,
Unfortunately, I know ALL about this little rascal. On Wind Witch, when
we had the Nanni, we had the same water pump start leaking. We searched the
entire US looking for a repair kit...no luck. We searched through
Mercedes...no luck. We searched the truck repair centers since the Nanni was
a common engine to use for refrigerated trailers on transcontinental
haulers...no luck. We went to Mercedes and bought their water pump for the
identical engine block. Well, it almost fit! Finally we were able to find a
Nanni replacement pump from a marine distributor in Texas. It was, and he
knew it, the only such in North America. He demanded, and got from us,
$1200 - and this was in the 1980s. Did I mention we searched every
distributor in Europe for Nanni, Mercedes, etc? Well, we did. This whole
nightmare really sucks, still.
Now, are you happy to have company?

p.s. If you are unbelievably lucky, Michael Moradzadeh may have one or two
still lying somewhere. One of them is the one I paid $1200 for.

$1200 seems like a fair price. I have somewhere between two and four
of these guys. Have sent a note to Ian.

I don't have a Nanni and, based on what I have read, would stay a long
distance away from such a beast but in the age of Google, cant a website
such as the following help?

I think I would change engines out of principle before I spent twelve
hundred on a water pump. That being said, maybe the humor went over my head.

Here's the Nanni dealer from whom I buy my parts:

http://www.west-4x4.demon.co.uk/om636/om636f.html

You can buy ANYTHING from him.

email: pri...@west-4x4.demon.co.uk

He rebuilds the engine and knows them well.

His price for a fresh water pump is 135 GBP, so not bad. I haven't asked him about the other pump. Give him all the info that you can and he'll quote a price.

I've sent emails to the two places mentioned by Bill and Bob, as it
would be nice to find some places with my/our Nanni parts. Seems odd
to be buying stuff from stores in England and Australia. The issue
seems to be finding a new seal that slips over the shaft and holds the
water in. My local guy found a new shaft oil seal and was able to
weld more material onto the scored shaft and hone it back down to
size. Hopefully Michael has the goods, though, safely tucked away.
No man should own 4 Nanni engine fresh water circulating pumps.

Is there a Mrs. M? What does she say when she looks upon your garage
and wishes she could park her car there? :)

There is a Mrs. M (Noelle). She has looked and she does despair.

Okay, I found the one that was rebuilt and never installed in 1988. It
looks fine.
I'll be happy to give it to you for shipping cost.
Or I can extract the seals from it and send them.

I also have a replacement part number JOHNSON F5B-9005

That may be obtainable locally. For a marine unit.

Michael
