Fellow Passport Owners,

On the Passport with midship head & separate shower arrangement - some of you have repaired/rebuilt the mast step resting on top of the keel. Can you tell me how much access is necessary to make the repair after the mast is pulled? One estimate to repair indicates that the head & head platform needs to be removed. Then, the sole underlayment (under the head area) also needs to be cut out. please advise.

thanks,

Captain Bill Caz.

Caz

Our P40 is a 1983 with Kenyon Mast. We just had our Rig Inspected by Brion Toss.

Our Heal assembly is incredibly rusty and Brion strongly suggested I replace ours heal.

It’s time for me to investigate pulling our mast and dealing with a number of issues.

Replacement of the rusty Steel Heal-Base assembly is priority #1 on our list.

Could anyone kindly address a few questions for me for a P40 Pullman layout with Kenyon Mast?

(I believe I saw someone replace their Heel with G10)

  1. Can someone point to these G10 Heal photos and documents?
  2. Does anyone have photos of your Kenyon Mast Heal from a Pullman layout?

Any details and photos on this subject would be greatly appreciated as I’d like to know what I’m dealing with here?

For someone I recall this has been done out of G10 before... I just cannot find it on this site?

Finally... I have been documenting our 5-year refit on a Facebook page called "Passport 40 sailing owners group".

If anyone cares to join or look over our projects... check it out https://www.facebook.com/groups/881240378629891/about/

Best wishes to all for 2020 as Daylight Savings approaches.

It's probably the 6092 section, see if these guys can get you a replacement.

Yes.. it possible could be this unit.

I will measure our mast tonight

My understanding is

1) Cast Aluminum Step fits inside the bottom of the mast spar and is screwed through sidewall of spar into step

2) Step is bolted to a steel shoe or heal plate that is ? glassed down onto a resin-block?

3) The deck tie-rod is bolted to the Steel shoe or heal plate as well.

Looking for any help on how to get all of this shit apart? Looks like big grunt work with a lot of cussing...

Honestly, I don't remember.  Last time my mast was off was over 12 years ago.  Obviously, the step bolts to the boat somehow and mast bolts to it.  Johnny B repainted his mast recently and has a Kenyon spar I think.  Maybe he'll chime in

On ours a P 42 4 large bolts held the step in place.  Use PB Blaster penetrant then a 6 point socket on an impact driver.  Let the PB soak a couple days.  Mine was an alum step on top of a steel plate.  If the impact driver does not break loose the bolts go bigger.  I did not have to rebuild the base.  Just reburbushed it.  Steel cleaner grinding.  Them chemical converted the rust.  Then painted it and reassembled it.  Used antisieze on the SS bolts to the steel.  Hope this helps.

Hi.

In my case the mast is not bolted to the aluminum step.  It is plenty heavy not to jump out.  If that has occurred likely the rig is gone.  The rigging and gravity hold it down!

Our 1984 P40’s mast is also simply sitting on that step.

Greetings Mast step People!

Using the Passport website if you search:
You will find some photos of the mast step repair with G10 I did about 9 years ago.  In the upper corner of the middle photo you will see a round piece of G10 that was also threaded with a SS bolt that you could screw/turn up, that made the SS head rise upward from the G10 support plate and pushed up into the bottom of the bulkhead, so it also used the same G10 support plate to support the bulkhead itself.  Best, Dean

Bill, I need to replace the steel plate the mast step sits on and have the same layout as you. Do you know why access was needed via the head? My plate looks accessible from the mast locker (besides being not a lot of space to work in).

Did you ultimately go with G10 as others have done?

I have a 1/2" piece of G10 laying around, for those that replaced the mild steel with G10, what thickness was used?

Thanks!
