Hi All,

I need to change the bellows on my PSS Shaft Seal, and to do this I
need to know the stern tube diameter. Can someone help me? The bellows
covers the part of the tube I need to measure.

We replaced our PSS with a traditional packing gland (a Buck Algonquin BUC/PB 125) since we can fix it anywhere and it cannot catastrophically fail.

For our 1984 P40, the shaft is 1-1/4 inch and our stern tube is 2-1/4 inch diameter.

Our stern tube measured 2-1/8" to 2-3/16" OD. I called PYI, and they
recommended the 2" model and to use a little soap if needed to slip it on.
The model we used was the PSS model 02-114-200, and we didn't need the soap.

Bill, are there any reports of catastrophic failure or are you just
being extremely and abundantly cautious? Aren't these installed on
new boats my manufacturers? I've been thinking about switching to the
PSS, away from a traditional gland, so am curious.

I just replaced mine last weekend. I ran it dry a bit (I think) and it was in pretty bad shape, but it never even leaked. In any case its recommend to be changed every 5 years which made mine well past due. Now I have the vent tube, so I can continue on down the path of alzheimers without a care.
