Hello,

Our 1984 P40, hull # 78, will need a cutlass bearing when we pull her. Can anyone supply a size for it so that it will be ready?

Thanks.

Our boat required a special order of a Duramax Marine Molded Code "Bird."  This is an unfinished bearing that had an OD of 1.76 to 1.78". We needed to do this because the standard "Bird" was not tight enough in the strut support.  This bearing was turned down slightly to provide a tight fit (it is supposed to be pressed in).  The standard Bird might work for you.

Info on this bearing can be found at: http://www.duramaxmarine.com/pdf/CutlessBearing.pdf

Dennis,
I'm not clear about your boat. Is it a 40 or a 42? The replacement of a cutlass bearing on a 40 is easy and straight forward. You can even remove the strut and have a machine shop place the bearing, then reinstall the strut...but not in the water w/o a whole lot of hassle.

Bill...my cutlass pulled out of the sleeve in the support so I can go down and measure it when I get back to the boat around the 20th dec.  I am going to try and suck it back in with something like a reverse bearing puller....dennis

While we are on the topic of struts and cutlass bearings, etc., how
hard is it to find a new prop shaft support strut for a P40? Are they
stock off the shelf things, or do have to have them fabricated, or
what? If we can order them, does anybody have name, address, part
number, pricing info, etc.?

The standard "Bird" fits Adagio.

When I was hauled for bottom paint a year ago we found my prop shaft
support strut cutlass bearing needing to be replaced. Opequimar in PV
had a new one on hand that fit just fine. No idea what the numbers
for it were, but sourcing it didn't seem to be an issue.

How did you determine that it needed to be replaced?

The shaft could be wiggled a tiny little bit inside the bearing.
