Ahoy All Passporters!

My wife and I were looking at the Passport 40s on Yachtworld recently.
In a couple of the cabin photos, you can see a plastic trash can out
on the floor. In another, it is behind the companionway stairs. We
both agreed that these boats have the same conundrum as us: "Where do
we keep the trash/recycling bin?"

Regardless of whether you are cruising the oceans or docks, we still
need a convenient place for trash, recycling (bottles and cans), and
possibly compost. I've thought of building a multi-bin trash/
recycling receptacle behind the stairs that is more aesthetically
pleasing than a Rubbermaid bin. These bins need to be convienent to
receive said trash and easy to remove a bag when removing it from the
boat.

Any thoughts or suggestions for the Passport 40?

We keep ours behind the companionway steps. It's a small can, but sufficient.

Works great

I have a proper trash compartment on the right hand side of the sink. it's a
hole in the galley, where there is a stainless steel compartment that can be
removed and it closes with a nice lid made of the same material as the
galley top. looks the business. thought that was standard on passports?

What a great topic, Doug! We have 2 square buckets behind the companion way
stairs on Wind Witch. We line them with white vinyl bags we get from Costco
(big roll). When full, we tie them and place them in the compartment behind
the door - under the cockpit sole - until we reach a place to dispose of
them. Tidy, no leaks, no flies, etc.

Interesting. I have a compartment, but I don't think it is for trash.
We use it for galley storage. This must be a modification.

It sounds like behind the companionway stairs is the way to go. I
might try to build something a little more "woody" than "rubbermaidy".
No offense! One thing that does bother me is that when I lift the
companionway stairs, half of a sandy beach comes falling down onto the
sole.

I just have a standard Rubbermaid bin, about 36"
tall, freestanding in the galley, and use
standard plastic bags to line it. It pretty much
stays in the corner of the galley to the left
(aft) of the stove. Not your High Esthetic approach, but seems to work.

Doesn´t really get in the way because I never
open the lower refrigerator door. The bin has
tipped over a couple of times in rough
conditions, but only a couple of times, when I´ve
forgotten to secure it. I collect recycling in a
separate big plastic bag and when the
quarterberth is occupied by another human being
cram it under the companionway steps.

Even on a couple of moderately long (23-25 day)
passages I didn´t accumulate more garbage, both
recyclable and non-recyclable, than I could
easily stash under the cockpit even though
there´s quite a bit of other stuff stashed in
there, and under the companionway steps. Organics
go to Neptune, who kindly sees to the composting.

The holes in the galley counter on either side of
the sink I use for storage -- containers and pots
to port, big Costco-sized bottles of vinegar and olive oil to starboard.

Now I like this topic as well.......

During our rebuild of Iemanja, we are going out of our way to keep access good to the "garage" under the cockpit. Even went so far as to increase the size of the entry opening by cutting out upwards as far as possible  and enlarging the door as well, so that we can get in and out easier.
Our reasoning is that this is the only real storage space that you have on the boat so you have to use it wisely.

My point is, don't completely close off the opening with an elaborate trash container system.....

Keep it simple.....Rubbermaid.....behind the stairs...easy to move out of the way.....and good thought and planning as to how stuff is packaged that you bring on board.  When the trash is full, tie it up and out of there.....into the dingy on deck or in the davits, which might presumably have a cover on it....
