From Slavery to Sonship: Claiming Our True Inheritance :-
A slave seeks only one thing—freedom. His vision is limited to escape from bondage and the hope of release. But a son does not live with such narrow expectations. A son knows that he has a place in his father’s house, a share in his father’s inheritance, and a secure identity that no one can take away.
The Slave Versus the Son :-
The Apostle Paul explains this truth clearly:
“So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are His child, God has made you also an heir.” (Galatians 4:7, NIV)
Many approach God as though they were slaves—seeking only freedom from guilt, fear, or sin. They long for relief but stop short of claiming their full inheritance. Yet the Gospel declares that those who believe in Christ are not merely freed servants; they are adopted children of God.
God’s Pattern in the Old Testament :-
The story of Israel foreshadowed this truth. The people of Israel were slaves in Egypt, but God’s purpose was not only to set them free—it was to make them His children and His treasured possession:
“Then say to Pharaoh, ‘This is what the Lord says: Israel is my firstborn son, and I told you, “Let my son go, so he may worship me.”’” (Exodus 4:22–23, NIV)
God’s desire was not just to liberate His people from Pharaoh, but to bring them into covenant relationship as sons. He gave them the Promised Land as their inheritance, a picture of the greater spiritual inheritance to come in Christ.
Adoption into God’s Family :-
In the New Testament, this promise reaches its fullness. Paul writes:
“The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by Him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’” (Romans 8:15, NIV)
This means believers no longer live under the fear of judgment. Instead, they live in the security of being loved children who can call God “Father.”
The True Inheritance :-
Our inheritance in Christ goes far beyond freedom from sin:
Freedom from bondage – “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.” (Galatians 5:1)
A new identity – “Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ.” (Romans 8:17)
An eternal destiny – “And I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.” (2 Corinthians 6:18)
[Walking in Sonship]
Jesus made this distinction plain:
“Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.” (John 8:35, NIV)
Slaves live by fear, but sons live by love. Slaves work for wages, but sons inherit the kingdom. Slaves measure life by survival, but sons walk in destiny.
The call of the Gospel is not only to deliver us from slavery but to awaken us to sonship. Only those who know God as Father step into their true inheritance—identity, fellowship, and eternal destiny in Him.
