Agreed.  Building with papercrete appears to be dying.  Crafting with papercrete is on the rise.

Yes, I have seen some of that too. Had been looking for information on using papercrete in the far north. Lots of snow and well below freezing regularly. No help. Guess those of us that are new are on our own. I talked to a few of the members years ago but no one really who had tried it in this kind of weather. A few have, but could never make contact with them to see if it held up.

Good luck on your ventures into papercrete. I know there was a lot of information in the old posts.

I continue to be interested and collect cardboard in anticipation of
building a mixer and making walls and decorations for my homestead.

That is very true. We continue to collect cardboard as well. Have acquired a rear end to use and a old, large propane tank we are planning to use as the tank for our mixer. Just need to get time and some sort of shop to work in to build it. 3 ft of snow and -11 makes it kinda hard to work on for now.

We had an epic failure due to early rains, so for now, we are not using papercrete, but we will be back at it, one of these years.  We are in Texas,

this appears just as i was thinking about papercrete!
i make ferrocement sculptures and often have used some paper in the top coat, the sculpted layer, because it is easier to work with and 'softer' than concrete but i have some concern about the longevity of the papercrete. So far the early ones are holding up- i have waterproofed them and the percentage of paper pulp is not high...
Has anyone tested paperadobe for bushfire resistance? bush fires are increasingly a problem-i have read that if the mineral content in the mix is high enough, then papercrete won't burn but of course Portland cement will burn out where clay will not. Could i substitute clay for the PC?
cheers, eo

I can personally attest to the fact that once it is exposed to fire, it does not burn with a flame,. However, it does smolder and will turn to ash. Just takes a lot longer and there was no visible flame with our test block. Of course this depends partially on the amount of paper vs concrete in the mix.

In our case my husband decided to dry the block some by putting it in my wood fired oven. It got hot enough to get it smoldering and turn it to ash. It took several hours to do so. When I realized it was burning, I took it outside and let it sit in a gravel area. When I looked at it the next morning it was all ash.. Each time I checked it the evening I put it out there you could tell it was still smoldering (smoking)

I know they require what is known as "tall boots and a big hat."

As in it needs to be well up off the ground level and have good, large overhangs to protect it from rain, puddles, snow, etc.

Yes, I have tested several mixes.  They don't burn they smolder, and turn to ash over a long period of time if they catch fire.  A mixture of at least 50% cement is needed to prevent this.

That was not the issue, we were using it on the roof, expecting we had until October to get the job done, the rains hit hard in August and stayed until March is serious mudpit season.  No way to fully protect what we had done and the weight of it has cracked the rafters.  The papercrete is fine, it stays nice, but the weight of a wet roof.....

Thankyou for that- i will have to do some tests clearly. Smouldering slowly to ash would not be good! If it is 50% concrete , is there additional sand in the mix or no?
i  want to use it on walls and have lots of clay here so paper-adobe is interesting.
I am thinking of using crusher dust in the mix as i can get that easily to provide the 'sand' component. If the oven could get it hot enough to smoulder, then it sounds like there is a 'temperature over time' factor involved. I understood that 80% mineral will not burn but i don't know now if that is by weight or by volume- maybe that's  obvious- sorry if its a stupid question but are you going on weight or by volume to get 50% PC?
cheers, eo
