It would be a good Humanitarian cause to Join Bone Marrow Registry - you may be able to save someone's life by Donating Bone Marrow - & it may come in useful, if YOU need this donation, God forbid.

You would be sent a kit & required to only provide a sample(not the Vicky kind) - You swab your cheek with the provided cotton swab and mail it back in the pre-stamped envelope - & you can decide later if you want to become a donor(not the Vicky kind) - a Bone Marrow Donor.

Does donating bone marrow sound painful or high-risk to you? It's not! Donating marrow is similar to donating blood.

Dear Mr. Jain,

We are a group of students at Stanford University, and are contacting you in your role with the University of California Alumni in India. We are hoping you could be the person who saves our dear friend and colleague, Nalini Ambady.

Nalini is a Professor of Psychology at Stanford, and has had a relapse of the Leukemia she battled in 2004. Nalini is a renowned scientist (if you have read Malcolm Gladwell’s Blink you know her work), an amazing and loving mom, an inspirational mentor who has fostered the careers of dozens of people fighting for social equality, an award-winning teacher, and a groundbreaking Indian American (the first Indian faculty member in both Harvard and Stanford’s Psychology Department). She needs your help to survive.

The help we request is not monetary but instead requires about 5-10 minutes of your time. Nalini needs to find a bone marrow donor within the next 7 weeks in order to survive.  Due to certain genetic markers, her match will almost certainly be South Asian. Right now, there is no match in the registry for Nalini. The power to fix this is in your hands.

To be specific about my request to you, we would like to ask you about the possibility of 3 things:

1. Would you be willing to send an e-mail appeal, like this one, to your group, the University of California Alumni in India  This e-mail appeal would include information on how people can register to be bone marrow donors (see below for an example).

2. Do you have any meetings or events in the next 4 weeks where we might be able to have a bone marrow donor registration drive? Through our organization and the Be the Match foundation (the national organization for the bone marrow registry), we would be able to provide someone locally to come out and conduct the registrations – there would be no additional work on your side. Any registrations that we might be able to do through drives would be expedited – processed even faster to check for matches with Nalini. You can find more information at http://helpnalininow.org/.

3.   Do you have any additional contacts who we may get in touch with? Anyone in the South Asian community would be particularly helpful to contact.

It is a tragedy to consider the relatively small population of South Asians in the bone marrow registry because there is surely a match out there for Nalini and countless other South Asians suffering from leukemia and other blood diseases. We look forward to hearing from you and to the possibility of working together to save Nalini’s life. Please feel free to contact us any day or time at savenal...@gmail.com

Sincerely,

The Save Nalini Team

 Sample Email Appeal

Hello,

I have an unusual but very important request: Nalini Ambady, an Indian psychology professor at Stanford, has leukemia and urgently needs a bone marrow transplant. She has only 7 weeks left to find a matching donor, who most likely has to be Indian as well. Nalini is a mother of two, a beloved professor and mentor, and a wonderful person. You can find out more about her at www.nalinineedsyou.com.

You can help save her life by joining the bone marrow registry. This is very simple and takes almost no time. Search for a nearby drive that you can join in person here or complete the online registration below.

1)      Complete the online registration at http://marrow.org/Join/Join_Now/Join_Now.aspx?promo_code=nalini (if you’re in the US) or http://datriworld.org/ (if you’re in India). This takes less than 10 minutes.

2)      You will receive a kit in the mail. You swab your cheek with the provided cotton swab and mail it back in the pre-stamped envelope.

That’s it!

Finally, please forward this email or share these links with your South Asian friends, relatives, and colleagues, even if you do not sign up yourself.  Visit www.nalinineedsyou.com for more information and ways to spread the word, or if you have any questions, please shoot an email to helpna...@gmail.com.

Thank you,
[your name]

P.S. Does donating bone marrow sound painful or high-risk to you? It's not! Donating marrow is similar to donating blood. If you have questions about the processes, you can find an answer here.

The story of Prof Nalini Ambady of Stanford University was carried in local papers too. Pl see the attachment.
The appeal is specially for people of South India origin as there is a higher possibility of a genetic match.
