Selecting a Leader:

‘Who is going to take over from Steve Ballmer, the CEO of Microsoft?’ is in the news these days.  Microsoft Board appointed a committee to find the successor of Steve Ballmer, the outgoing CEO of Microsoft. They have been narrowing down from a list of possible successors from an initial 40 people, both internal and external. Finally they seemed to have zoomed on to Ford CEO Alan Mulally, former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop and Indian origin Cloud Chief, Satya Nadella. The selection committee has been really working hard for past so many months.

Similarly great companies with professional corporate culture like GE, Apple, Cisco and even L&T and Tata Group in India go into very deep selection process for selecting their group leaders. But this selection process doesn’t happen in a Lala Company (family owned business) in India as well as in other countries. Some Lala Companies slowly graduate to a highly professional culture and are willing to give the command of the family business to a highly deserving person from outside the family and the heir apparent from the family merely holds the majority share of the company or the complete ownership but gives full freedom to the professional to run the business.

India is a great country. Can India be allowed to be administered like a Lala Company? Yesterday, I went to a friend’s place with my wife. While chatting over tea and snacks, my wife just casually asked our host as to whom they are going to vote during this assembly election in Delhi that is due on 4th Dec, 2013. For a moment, I was quiet and just waiting for the reaction. Normally I don’t ask such difficult questions and have been of the view that voting for a candidate is a personal choice and people need not divulge their choice. But my friend was quite forthright and said without any hesitation, “We have been always Congress supporter since I was a child, so we shall be voting for Congress.” My friend is well educated and working in a private company in a senior position. I found it difficult to digest his logic.

I couldn’t control myself and my thoughts. I told him, “My dear Harish, I would do the same provided you answer my just one question.”

“Go ahead.” Harish said.

I said, “Congress has great leaders. According to me Shri Chidambaram is a great leader. Kapil Sibbal ji is also having a great experience. Pallam Raju is an excellent person and even Manish Tiwari speaks well and has sufficient experience and so is respected Antony and even Shinde ji”

“Kiran Walia and Shiela Dikshit are no less. Salman Khurshid and Jairam Ramesh are also great according to me. All of them are highly experienced.”

“With all these great people around with years of experience, how come the Congress party is projecting a novice Rahul Gandhi as the PM candidate? Do you want to say that Rahul is more capable than each one of these, I have named and many more that I have not named to lead the country? Rahul has zero experience of administration. Rahul is no intellectual. He is no economist. He is not even a good speaker. His speeches are illogical and without any flow. What leadership qualities he has demonstrated till today?”

“I will not go into the details of what he says is right or wrong?” I said.

“Just tell me, which way Rahul is more qualified than Shinde, Shiela, Salman, Sibal or Chidambram or Jairam and others I just named.”

My friend was speechless. He didn’t have the answer. All this conversation was going on in Hindi, Punjabi and a bit of English, all mixed. Before my friend Harish or his wife Neeta could say anything, their maid servant who was listening all this standing in a corner, retorted,

”Saab ji, Aapne to hamari aankhe khol di. Is baar to hum Modi ji ki party ko hi Vote denge.”

Neeta joined her, ”Bhai Sahib, Aap Theek Kahten Hain”

Neeta continued, “We have given almost 60 years to Congress and it is high time that we give a chance to a person who has proved himself in Gujarat.”

“Bhai sahib, I went to Ahmadabad a few months back. I was surprised to see the absolute clean water of Sabarmati River and the beautification done on its banks. It is a pleasure now to spend evenings there on the banks of Sabarmati and go for a morning jog there.” Neeta said.

“Why the same thing can’t be done with Yamuna river in Delhi?” queried Neeta.

Harish was listening all this silently. He was smiling. Fifty years of allegiance with a party can’t change so fast, I guessed.

“Dear Harish, Remember that India is not a Lala company. That the same family has the right to rule. Just tell me if dear Rahul Baba is more capable than all the great ministers of Congress I mentioned? If you tell me that “Yes, Rahul is more qualified and experienced than Sibal ji, Shinde ji, Jairam Ramesh ji Shiela ji etc etc. then I will also go with you and vote for Congress and say ‘Rahul Gandhi Zindabaad’.

“Arai Yaar, Desh ki Socho” I continued.

“It is high time that the pride of India and Indians is restored. Fast development and that too corruption free is the key issue. And BJP under Narendra Modi can do it. We have to support him with full strength in the states as well as the national level.”

Harish extended his hand to shake hands with me and nodded in agreement.

It is a fact that the leader we select, should be done with a lot of care and thought process. Whether it is MLA, MP or even a councillor is a leader for his/her constituency. All political parties should be very careful when they select their candidates for the election. I liked the tagline of BJP “Shasak Nahin Sevak”. I am not very sure how many BJP candidates also truly believe in this tagline. But it should be the Mantra of all the political parties and those who aspire to hold official positions should truthfully believe in this. These ethos of service to the masses have to be ingrained in the minds of the people who wish to contest elections to represent their constituencies in assembly or the parliament.

The leader should have great communication skills, no doubt. Only a great communicator can lead his people for a great cause or great sacrifice. In addition, his own ethics, moral values and sense of service and sacrifice has to be of the highest level. His integrity should be impeccable, that means there has to be a total synchronization between what he thinks, what he says and what he does. Our leaders must have great organizational skills. They should be able to take quick judicious decisions with a cool mind. They should be firm in their convictions and consideration but also have the courage to take actions against their own party men if they do anything wrong against the society or the nation. We have seen the past few years where the so called leader is considered to be totally honest. Anybody will vouch for his honesty but he lacks the courage to take action against his own corrupt and inefficient ministers. Forget about a firm action, he can’t even rebuke them.

The Mantra of politics should be “Nation First, then the Party and then the Self/family.” It may look strange. But it is possible. The example of BJP can be quoted here again. BJP took a lot of time before they declared Narendra Modi as their PM candidate. Advani ji was the biggest claimant. After all he deserves the credit for taking BJP to the level where it is today. There could also be some murmurs in the minds of Sushma ji and Arun Jaitly and may be a few more top leaders for the top post. Shiv Sena and JD(U) tried their best to create confusion in the minds of top decision makers of BJP. But their top leadership had a number of prolonged sessions of discussions in detail. And finally the top leadership, Rajnath Singh took a firm decision that was against the wishes of the Bheeshma Pitamah of the party and announced Narendra Modi as the PM candidate. In case of Advani ji, for some time he felt that he was bigger than the party but very soon he fell in line with the wishes of the party cadre and realized what was good for the nation.

Here is a man with highly humble background, who used to sell tea on the railway platform at one time and then he proved himself to be having great administrative, organizational and leadership qualities as the CM of a state. Today, you name an industrialist, you name a country, everyone wants to invest in Gujarat. Narendra Modi has been able to provide a corruption free one window clearance system that is fast, accurate and supportive. Even the labour class from states like Bihar, UP and Oddisha makes a beeline in the factories of Gujarat so that they can send handsome amount to their families at home and many of them have chosen Gujarat as their second home.

Let all political parties demonstrate this kind of selection procedure while selecting their leaders at the national level as well as the state level and even while giving tickets for the MLA/MP elections. I request the readers of this article to vote for any party they like, provided they have a democratic system of selecting their leaders and they are not one man/woman organizations.

Remember “Our state or our country is not a Lala Company.”

Friends,

Let us overlook our self-imposed discipline for a short time of say next 4 days now & discuss politics up front as there is nothing much else of Nation-Building Importance happening in this group to synergize with at the moment. This issue would al least draw a few of us to one corner of this political circus & synergize our maximum potential.

It is not everyday that we have elections & here is an election with a difference - perhaps it is for the first time after JP's call for " Total Revolution" which was really a reaction to the oppressive Emergency Regime - that a genuine Jan Andolan has been able to make a dent in Corrupt & Crime-ridden National Politics. It is time we stopped trying to be or professing to be a-political on this platform - it is "Now or Never" to bring about a change we all wish to see.

Dear Friends,

Can you devote a few hours today, to campaign for AAP? Thousands of volunteers are doing this, all across Delhi and outside. These few hours of your time, will make the difference in the final result of this historic elections.

If you are in Delhi….

You can join the biggest volunteer campaigning program (BUZZ) to flood the streets of Delhi with AAP supporters, who would proudly wear their AAP topis, carry jhadus and placard, and distribute pamphlets to spread the message of AAP in small groups at selected 47 locations. Yes, it is that simple.

Here is how you can join:

1. Come to the metro location closest to you from the selected metro locations (AAP Buzz metro points) published on AAP website. At this location you will be met by an AAP volunteer, provided campaign materials, attached to a small group and sent to one of the selected 47 buzz locations in that area to spread the message of AAP.

2. Visit AAP’s Connaught Place office (41, Hanuman Road, Cannaught Place) or call 85888 33565 for more details.

If you are not in Delhi…

- Please pick up the phone and call the residents of Delhi. Call 7827 227 227 or 1800 200 2160 and seek people's vote for AAP.

Thanks,

Arvind
