Jean Wallace Abraham, 68, a former resident of Pacific Grove, died on
Jan. 3, at Douglas Community Hospital at Roseburg, Ore. Mr. Abraham was
born in Vacaville on March 10, 1923. He attended local schools,
graduating from Pacific Grove High School in 1940. He was an Air Force
veteran of World War II. A member of the American Institute of
Planners, Mr. Abraham began a 30 year career in city planning in 1955
as the city of Seaside's first chief building and zoning
administrator, and later became the city's first planning and
development director. After leaving the area in 1960, he went on to
become the planning director for the city of San Luis Obispo and
community development director for the cities of Santa Maria and
Pittsburg. Mr. Abraham had been a resident of Roseberg, Ore., for the
last three years. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; a son, Jean
Anthony of Monterey; and a daughter, Jana Abraham of Monterey; a
sister, Emma Lopez of Pacific Grove; two grandsons; and numerous nieces
and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Marion
and Jessie Abraham, and a brother, Edwin, all of Pacific Grove.
Memorial services will be held at a later date in Pacific Grove. The
family suggests that any memorial contributions be sent to the American
Cancer Society, 1184 Monroe St., Suite 1, Salinas 93901.

Gumm '40 just passed on. They lived the latter part of their lives
thousands of miles apart. Link was an engineer working and living in
Thailand for the last several decades. Not well the last few years he
was unable to travel - foregoing a return home for a visit. Woody,
like Link, a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, was an electrician, who lived
and worked in Alaska over 25 years. Woody had retired to Florence on
the Oregon coast, and leaves his wife Betty and sister Louise '42.

Harvey Franklin Bodine, 80, died April 1 in Walnut Creek. He was born
July 19, 1922, in Pocatello, Idaho, and moved to Pacific Grove at age
2. He was a 1940 graduate of Pacific Grove High School and worked as a
service manager for Coca-Cola Bottling Co. in Oakland from 1947 to
1985. Mr. Bodine was in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1947, and saw duty
during World War II. He was an aviation machinist mate first class and
spent much of his time aboard the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga. He is
survived by his wife of 56 years, Roberta Bodine of Brentwood; two
daughters, Carol Crans of Redding and Linda Price of Pinole; a sister,
Betty Glenn of Orem, Utah; a brother, Dick Arnold of Pacific Grove;
seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Memorial services
have been held. The family suggests that any memorial contributions be
made to the local American Heart Association, the Boy Scouts of

Richard Shepardson Chivers, 73, a lifelong Pacific Grove resident, died
Tuesday at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. The son of a
builder, he was a cabinetmaker and woodworking artist and was a
maintenance technician at the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History
for 16 years. Mr. Chivers was born July 1, 1921. He attended Robert
Down Elementary School, Pacific Grove High School and Parks Air College
in East St. Louis, Ill. He was a staff sergeant and aircraft mechanic
in the Pacific during World War II. Mr. Chivers was past president of
the Pacific Grove High School PTA. He was active with the Monterey
Peninsula Concert Association for many years, and was a member of the
Monterey Peninsula Garden Club. He was active in the Boy Scouts as a
patrol and troop leader in the 1960s and 70s, and was a former deacon
and elder in the Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife,
Florence; a son, Richard of Pacific Grove; and a brother, John of
Pacific Grove. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Paul
Mortuary, with burial to follow at El Carmelo Cemetery. The family
suggests that any memorial contributions be sent to the American Red
Cross or the Salvation Army.

Genevieve May Barth, a Salinas homemaker and former Pacific Grove
resident, died Monday at the Hospice of the Monterey Peninsula
following a lengthy illness. She was 65. Mrs. Barth was born Aug 10,
1922 in Dunlap, Iowa. She moved to the Monterey Peninsula as a child
and graduated from Pacific Grove High School. After marrying in 1945,
she moved with her husband to Pittsburgh, Pa., where the couple lived
for 18 years. They returned to Monterey County 24 years ago. She is
survived by her husband, Harry, three sons, Harry of Sacramento, Gerald
of Salinas, and Michael of South Dakota; one daughter, Sandy Vogt of
Salinas; her stepfather, John B. Smith of Paradise; two brothers,
George Cornelius of Salinas and Lyle Cornelius of Kingman, Ariz.; and
12 grandchildren. Memorial Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday in
Madonna dl Sasso Church. Private cremation will be in the Garden of
memories. Whithurst/Miller Funeral Service is in charge of

William Worthington Culver, 69, a former Pacific Grove resident,
Monterey cannery worker and rural mail carrier, died Friday at a
hospital in Modesto after a period of failing health. Born June 8,
1919, in New Monterey, he lived and attended schools in Pacific Grove
and worked for the Hovden Cannery for 10 years and as a mail carrier in
Carmel Valley for 16 years. Mr. Culver, known as Bill, was a member of
the Carmel Gem and Mineral Society and held a master's degree in
gemology from the Gemological Institute of America. During his years as
a mail carrier, Mr. Culver also provided delivery services including
groceries and other items for customers on his route in the remote
Cachagua Valley and had planted more than 2,500 seedling pine trees on
the Cachagua Grade. He moved to the Sierra Nevada foothills a few years
ago. Mr. Culver is survived by his wife, Lynn; a brother, Edwin of
Pacific Grove, and a sister, Betty Williams of Castroville. No services
are planned, and private cremation will take place in Modesto.

Paul Douglas Ethridge, 80, a retired Cannery Row employee and security
worker died Aug. 18. A native of Visalia Paul lived in Pacific Grove
over 65 years. A natural athlete, he excelled playing football in
school. He served in WWII aboard a navy battleship in the South Pacific
Ocean. Paul lived in the same house his parents bought in the 1940s. He
enjoyed playing golf and played in many tournaments at the Pacific
Grove Golf Links.

Robert Elgin Hyler, 74, of Puyallup, Wash., a retired lieutenant
commander and former resident of Pacific Grove, died of a heart attack
Thursday at his home. He was born Sept. 25, 1922, in Sacramento, and
lived in Pacific Grove most of his life, moving to Puyallup seven years
ago. He was the younger son of the late Elmarie Dyke of Pacific Grove,
a local radio commentator and longtime director of the Feast of
Lanterns in Pacific Grove. A 1940 graduate of Pacific Grove High
School, he earned a bachelor's degree at University of Montana in
Missoula. Mr. Hyler was retired from the Navy and served as an
intelligence officer in naval aviation in the South Pacific during
World War II and in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He then owned
Lighthouse Realty, retiring a second time in 1984. He was a member of
the American Legion, the veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled
American Veterans. He is survived by his wife, Virginia; three sons,
Elgin of Ardmore, Pa., John of South San Francisco and Robert of
Houston; a daughter, Margaret Carey of Phoenix; two stepsons, Dana
Winslow and Jeffry Winslow, both of the Tacoma area; three
stepdaughters, Donna Grayson and Denise Williams, both of the Tacoma
area, and Melissa Furter of Monterey; a brother, Bill of Pebble Beach;
and 12 grandchildren. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at
the Paul Mortuary. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow
at El Carmelo Cemetery in Pacific Grove.

Robert (Bob) Hyler, 74, passed away May 22, 1997. He was born Sept. 25,
1922 in Sacramento, CA and had resided in the Puyallup - Tacoma area
for 7 years. He was a retired Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy,
serving in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Bob was a member of the Puyallup
V.F.W. Post #2224, Wilkeson Eagles Lodge, and the Lakewood Moose Lodge.

Robert Elgin "Bob" Hyler, 74 ('40, of Puyallup, WA, d May 1997)
died very unexpectedly of respiratory arrest, however, he had been
suffering from a mild asthma condition. Excepting his years in the US
Navy, where he retired as a Lt. Cdr. And the last several years of his
life, he was a lifelong resident of the Peninsula. Bob excelled in
sports, principally in football and track. When WWII broke out, Wayne
Bennett '39, Jack Burnham '40 and Bob enlisted in the Navy the next
week. He served in the South Pacific as a Naval Aviation Ordinance man.
Following graduation from the University of Montana he was commissioned
an officer and he retired in the mid 60s. Bob operated Lighthouse
Realty for a number of years and was in business with his mother, the
late Elmarie H. Dyke '15 before retiring to Puyallup, WA, where he
succumbed at home. He is survived by his wife Virginia, three sons,
Elgin of PA, John of South San Francisco, and Robert Vincent of
Houston, TX; a daughter, Margaret Carey of Phoenix, AZ, and his older
brother, Bill of Pebble Beach.

Mildred "Millie" Louise Karl Symington, 71, a former resident of
Pacific Grove, died Tuesday at Brookside Hospital in San Pablo. She was
born Feb. 12, 1922, in Batesville, Ind., and moved to Pacific Grove in
1930. She attended local Pacific Grove schools and graduated in 1940
from Pacific Grove High School. She moved to the San Francisco Bay area
in 1942, returning to live briefly in Pacific Grove in 1983 and 1984.
She is survived by two daughters, Carol Becker of Sacramento and Bonnie
Martinez of Richmond; a son, James Markham of Albany; a sister, Shirley

May 27, 1923 -- May 3, 2002 The Rev. Dr. Thomas F. Kerr, 78, pastor of
Community Presbyterian Church from 1970 until his retirement in July
1988, died in his sleep while visiting friends in Kingston, Tenn. He
and his wife, Bernice, lived in Vallejo until July 2000, when they
moved to Roseville. Mr. Kerr was born in Newman, and moved to Pacific
Grove at age 3. He attended kindergarten through high school in Pacific
Grove, graduating in 1940. A Boy Scout at 12, he served as Scoutmaster
and leader for nearly 40 years. He served on the summer staff at Mt.
Hermon Christian Conference Center for many years. He attended Salinas
Jr. College before transferring to San Jose State College. In 1942, he
enlisted in the Marine Corps., and in 1944, was assigned to Sea School
for advanced training to serve on capital ships. He was assigned to the
USS Cowpens, which was engaged in the Pacific conflict, and was one of
the first enlisted men to set foot on shore for the Japanese
occupation. After his discharge in 1945, he returned to San Jose and
completed his college education with a major in sociology and a minor
in psychology. In 1947, he enrolled in Fuller Theological Seminary in
Pasadena where he met his wife, whom he married in Hollywood on Sept.
4, 1950. He received a bachelor of Divinity degree in 1951, was
ordained by the San Jose Presbyter and moved to Elko, Nev., where he
served as a Sunday school missionary. In 1955, he returned to
California, and was pastor of parishes in San Martin, McCloud and
Scotia, before receiving a call to the Vallejo Church. In 1977 he
returned to Fuller Seminary for the Doctor of Ministry program and
received his D Min degree in 1982. He was a member of Kiwanis
International; the Caledonian Club of San Francisco; and was West Coast
vice president of the Kerr Family Association of North America since
early 1990s. He coordinated Kirklin' of Tartan worship services at the
Highland Games and Gathering of Clans, in Santa Rosa and Pleasanton for
15 years. He is survived by his wife, Bernice of Roseville; sons, David
and Richard (Chris) of Vallejo; Donald (Tammie) of Roseville; and
Robert (Tamie) of San Jose; sister, Jessie Baker of Boyes Springs; a
brother-in-law, a nephew and 14 grandchildren. Memorial services will
be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday at Community Presbyterian Church, Vallejo

Rex J. Lincoln, 68, a former longtime resident of the Monterey
Peninsula, died of cancer at his brother's home in Sonoma on Monday.
Mr. Lincoln, who was born in Doniphan County, Kan., on Dec. 23, 1922,
attended local schools and was a 1940 graduate of Pacific Grove High
School. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. A former member of
the Elks Lodge in Monterey, Mr. Lincoln moved to Redding 10 years ago
and was retired as manager of the Elks Lodge in Redding. He is survived
by his three daughters, Lisa Neils of Rocklin, Nancy Riggs of Augusta,
Ga., and Cathy Ouellette of Ukiah; two sons, John of Palm Desert and
Charles of Danville; two stepdaughters, Debi and Jennifer Weston, both
of Redding; a stepson Fletcher Weston of Redding; two sisters, Mamie
Mitchellof Yuma, Ariz., and Lillian Righello of Marina; two brothers,
Leland of Sonoma and Charles of Salinas; several grandchildren; one
great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. Memorial services will
be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Elks Lodge in Monterey. The
Neptune Society of Santa Rosa was in charge of cremation arrangements.

Warren Douglas MacCarty, 77, a Carson City resident for the past 23
years, died Sept. 8, 2000, at Carson Healthcare. He was born Dec. 25,
1922, in Joquel [i.e. Soquel, ed.], Calif., to Glen S. and Helen A.
Stanley MacCarty. He received his master's degree from San Jose State
University. He was a member of the golf team which won the NCAA
tournament in 1948 and was installed into the San Jose State University
Hall of Fame for Golf. Before moving to Carson City, he lived in
Oroville, Calif. Mr. MacCarty was a substitute math teacher in
Williams, Calif., an assistant golf pro at Eagle Valley Golf Course and
retired after 12 years at the Glenbrook Golf Course. He was a member of
the Professional Golfers' Association for 50 years and the Rotary Club
of Colusa, Calif. He was a member of the LDS church. He served in the
U.S. Air Force for six years and was stationed at Hickham Air Force
Base, Honolulu as a control tower operator during World War II. Among
his survivors are his wife Barbara J., son David and daughter Susie
Bargmann, all of Carson City. Private inurnment will be held. Cremation
will be at Truckee Meadows Crematory in Sparks. Memorial contributions
may be made to the American Parkinson's Disease Association, Inc.,
any local chapter. Reno Memorial Cremation and Burial Society, Reno, is
in charge of arrangements.

MacCarty 77, a Carson City resident for the past 23 years, died Sept.
8, 2000, at Carson Healthcare. He was born Dec. 25, 1922, in Soquel,
CA. He was a member of the golf team which won the NCAA tournament in
1948 and was installed into the San Jose State University Hall of Fame

William S. Mayer, 80, died Sunday [Aug. 3] in Monterey. He was born
Dec. 25, 1922, in Lodi and lived in Monterey County for 68 years. Mr.
Mayer was a paper carrier for The Herald in his earlier years. His
route included Cannery Row, where he became acquainted with Monterey
notables such as John Steinbeck and Doc Ricketts. He graduated from
Pacific Grove High School in 1940. He served in the U.S. Army during
World War II from 1943-1946. He was in the Army's Service Forces Band
based in Vancouver, Wash. After his military service, Mr. Mayer worked
as a buyer in the housewares department at Holman's Department Store.
He later worked for California State Automobile Association for more
than 30 years, retiring in 1987. Mr. Mayer was a longtime, active
member of First Baptist Church of Monterey, serving on various boards
and singing in the choir for many years. He enjoyed music and was
involved in I Cantori Di Carmel for 11 years. He was also involved with
Joyful Tidings and the Celebration Choir. He is survived by his wife of
57 years, Ellena; a son, Garth W. Mayer of Monterey; and a daughter,
Christi Mayer Agor of Honolulu. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m.
Friday at First Baptist Church of Monterey. The Paul Mortuary is
handling arrangements. The family suggests that any memorial
contributions be made to Building Renovation Fund at First Baptist
Church of Monterey.

Army during World War II from 1943-1946. He was in the Army's Service
Forces Band based in Vancouver, Wash. After his military service, Mr.
Mayer worked as a buyer in the housewares department at Holman's
Department Store. He later worked for California State Automobile
Association for more than 30 years, retiring in 1987. He is survived by
his wife of 57 years, Ellena; a son, Garth W. Mayer of Monterey; and a

Word has been received here of the death of James W. Meadows, 46, of
Rialto, a former Pacific Grove resident. Mr. Meadows died at Rialto Aug
14 after an illness of more than a year. He was born in Monterey Nov.
13, 1921, and attended grammar school and high school in Pacific Grove.
A veteran of Navy service in World War II he moved to Rialto 12 years
ago and was employed there as a lineman for the Southern California
Edison Co. He is survived by his wife, Doreen, and a daughter, Susan,
both of Rialto; two sons, Paul of Chino and James of Sonoma; and
another daughter, Mrs. Edre Turner of Travis Air Base. He also leaves a
sister, Mrs. Amelia Bushell of Pacific Grove; three brothers, George of
Arroyo Seco, Frank of Carmel Valley and Walt of Monterey; three
half-sisters, two half-brothers and several nieces and nephews all
living on the Monterey Peninsula; and three grandchildren. Funeral
services were held Friday from the Colton Funeral Chapel and burial
followed in Green Acres Memorial Gardens in Bloomington.

Richard H. Merritt passed away March 2, 2000, in Fresno, CA, at age 77.
Dick was born on May 12, 1922, in Korea, where his parents, Richard H.
Merritt II and Mabel B. Merritt were employed. Dick was the oldest of
four brothers who all were raised in Pacific Grove, CA. He went on to
graduate in economics from the University of California in 1946. Dick
is survived by his bride of 55 years, Betty Jeanne Buchanan Merritt;
his two sons, Richard H. Merritt IV and wife, Cindy, and Grant R.
Merritt and his wife, Sheila; his granddaughter, Jennifer Andrus
Merritt; his grandsons, Richard H. Merritt V and his wife, Shannon, and
Scott R. Merritt, and his great-grandson, Richard H. Merritt VI. Dick,
Betty and Dick Jr. co-founded Cen-Cal Mach. A memorial service will be
held at the Mayflower Church, Pacific Grove, on Sunday, May 12, 2000 at
2:00 p.m. Neptune Society of Central CA, Cremation - Memorial Chapel.

William R. Pugh, a Monterey Peninsula resident for 63 years and a
survivor of the attack at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, died Sunday in
his home following a lengthy illness. He was 64. Mr. Pugh was born May
8, 1921, in Los Angeles. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy
and worked for 20 years in civil service at Fort Ord. He was a member
of American Legion Post 41 of Monterey. He is survived by his wife,
Anni Pugh of Monterey; a daughter, Carmen Douville of Del Rey Oaks; and
his mother, Juanita Pugh Rhodes of Pacific Grove. Private cremation
will be held at Little Chapel by-the-Sea. Paul Mortuary is in charge of
arrangements. The family suggests contributions in the Hospice of the

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, in Christ
Church Episcopal Parish in Lake Oswego for Barclay Spence, who died
Jan. 22 at age 82. Mr. Spence was born June 22, 1923, in New York City.
He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He graduated from
Swarthmore College and received a master's degree from New York
University. He was a mechanical engineer in Buffalo, N.Y., before
moving to Lake Oswego in 1997. He was a charter volunteer for the Kids
Cafe in association with the Boys & Girls Club. In 2000, she married
Mary Choklat. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Carley Scibetta,
Linda Lee and Cindy Kirksey; son, Don; and five grandchildren.

Bernice Steinmetz Brown, 71, of Pacific Grove died Wednesday [Aug 17]
at the Hospice House in Monterey. Mrs. Brown was born on Sept. 30,
1922, in Wailuka, Maui, Hawaii. She moved to Pacific Grove with her
family when she was 2 years old and graduated from Pacific Grove High
School in 1940. She was a loan officer at Wells Fargo Bank, first in
Monterey and then in Castroville, retiring in 1981 after 25 years. Mrs.
Brown was a member of St. Mary's by-the-Sea Episcopal Church and was
an active member for the Altar Guild and the St. Mary's Guild for
many years. She was also a member of the Duo Circle of the First
Christian Church of Pacific Grove for 30 years, the Women of the Moose
and the Elks Ladies of Monterey Lodge No. 1285. She is survived by her
husband of 30 years, George; a step-daughter, Barbara Lise Brown of
Pacific Grove; and a brother, Clarence Steinmentz of Sonora. Memorial
services will be held at 3 p.m. tomorrow at St. Mary's Episcopal
Church in Pacific Grove. Private burial has taken place at El Carmelo
Cemetery. The family suggests that any memorial contributions be sent
to the Hospice House, St. Mary's by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, the
Women of the Moose or the Elks Ladies.

George Uchida, 64, a native of Monterey and a resident of Pacific Grove
for more than 40 years, died Thursday at his Cupertino home following a
short illness. Mr. Uchida was born Aug. 14, 1923, in Monterey. Except
for a period during World War Ii, he made his home in Pacific Grove
before moving to Cupertino more than 20 years ago. A veteran of World
War II, Mr. Uchida was a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars,
the Japanese-American Citizens League and El Estero Presbyterian Church
in Monterey. He is survived by his wife, Bette; a daughter, Deborah of
Cupertino, and two brothers, Hideo of Seaside and Hiroshi of Monterey.
Funeral services were held Saturday in the Lima Family Mortuary,
Sunnyvale. Burial was Monday at Mission Memorial Park in Seaside.

Elayne Johnson, 76, of Pacific Grove, a gift shop owner and clerk, died
of cancer yesterday at Ocean View Health Care in Monterey. Born May 11,
1921, in Saginaw, Mich., she had lived in Pacific Grove for 71 years.
Mrs. Johnson attended local schools and graduated from Pacific Grove
High School in 1939. She was a gift shop owner and clerk for 36 years.
Mrs. Johnson owned the Tradewinds Gift Shop on Fisherman's Wharf for
several years and later worked for Shells of Carmel for 15 years. She
was a member of the Pacific Grove Alumni Association. She is survived
by two sons, Rich of San Jose and Randy of Pacific Grove, three
grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Her husband, Robert, died
in 1979. At her request, no services will be held. Following cremation
at the Little Chapel by-the-Sea, inurnment will be at El Carmelo
Cemetery. The Paul Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The family
suggests that any memorial contributions be sent to the Oncology Unit
of Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, P.O. Box HH, Monterey
93942.

died Jan. 26 at Monterey Convalescent Hospital. She was 78. Born Sept.
16, 1921, in Wyoming, she had lived in Seaside for many years. At her
request, no services will be held. Cremation is under the direction of
the Paul Mortuary [Pacific Grove]. Interment will take place in the
Forest lawn cemetery in Covina.
