Dear PWBC Members,
Imam Steve Mustapha Elruek invited the People's Water Board to an interfaith Ramadan Iftar Dinner in Warren with the Islamic Organization of North America on February 24th.
Imam Steve said, "Ramadan is a sacred month of fasting, reflection, and charity, a time of spiritual renewal and community." A gentleman sang a beautiful prayer before the meal.
There were dates and water on the table for people to break their fast with. Imam Steve explained that dates are nutritious and help women in labor. Folks helped themselves to delicious hummus, rice, lamb, chicken, garlic sauce (toum), and fattoush. And hot coffee and baklava were for dessert!
Aisha Farooqi, a Democrat running for the Michigan House seat in District 11, gave a powerful speech on justice. The Mayor of Warren, Lori Stone, was in attendance, along with Rabbis and Christian Pastors.
Iftar is a beautiful practice of community care, and we all felt deeply grateful to be a part of it.

Thank you, Imam Steve!

“To love. To be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty in its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all, to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never to forget.”
