Hi René & All,

I have added the Kopp & Will 1858 list of chemical elements to the PT database. Excellent find René! 😀👍🍾


I have put the data into Excel and compared with modern data. As oxygen (Sauerstoff) is given as 8, there are numerous factor or 2 and 3 errors in the data, which Cannizzaro was able to eliminate with his letter, also of 1858.

I have added a bit more to the Cannizzaro entry:

Hi Mark,

In fact, René located additional Cannizzaro’s values on pp. 11–12 of the 1858 JFC, and I pointed out that this journal also includes an atomic weight table at the beginning and shared a link to a digitized version. Interestingly, the "consensus" atomic weight table of that year didn´t consider some Cannizzaro´s values published on p. 12. Leaving questions of attribution aside, atomic weight tables appear in several other years as well, as René also noted. Below is a non-exhaustive list that I was able to compile in my limited time:




There are some years missing; although they may be digitised too. Simply did not appear in a quick search. Perhaps someone with more time could complete the list and compare how "consensus" atomic weights evolved over the years, at least from the JFC perspective.

Apologies to Mario, I should have cited you.

I have been busy… I have found and added element lists from the years 1858 to 1873 to the database.


And… I have compared the 1858 data with the very modern looking 1873 data:

Hi All,

A couple of folk have pointed out that there was a math mistake with the error column. 100% instead of 0%. Whoops. (I was showing deviation from perfect, rather than error.)

I have fixed this… however, the data is shown as an image (.png) file and many browsers cache image files and so it may not update for you, even if you do a page refresh. (Mine doesn’t!)
