I am re-posting this at the top of the topics so it is easy to find.  I have sent a message to Paul Wade to verify the board prices quoted below and to ascertain their availability.

Here is the price estimate for the 903/1296 transverters:

In the interest of transparency I feel obligated to mention that there are very nice transverters supplied by SG-LABS in Bulgaria for 903, 1296 and 2304 for a price under $300 each at least when I bought them.  I am not sure what their price is currently - they don't post their prices on their web site at www.sg-labs.com so you need to e-mail them to ask.  There are also transverters by DB6NT and DowneastMicrowave which can be ordered but they are considerably pricier (around $550). One reason for building them ourselves is to learn how they work and have some fun at the same time.

For those curious about the higher bands here is an estimate prepared by N6IZW for the San Diego Microwave Group.  Note the free TCXOs do not apply to us.  There will be additional costs to build a "ready to go" transverter.  Those include an antenna switching relay - I have some available for $12, a sequencer for the relay available as a surface mount kit for $15 from me or built for $25 from W6PQL , a case, coax suitable for making connections between the modules, LEDs, switches, power connector, etc.

I have my W1GHZ 10 GHz complete.  When I accomplish that I will try the ADF4350 synthesizer using its internal crystal to see how bad the drift is.  If it is too bad I will lock the ADF4350 to an external 10 MHz reference.  I estimate the additional cost will be around $60.

Be aware the higher band transverters are considerably more complicated and involve using pipe caps as filters.  This involves buying copper pipe caps from your favorite hardware store, sanding the bottom so it lays flat on the PC board and then soldering the pipe caps onto the board by either using a heat gun or a heavy duty soldering iron.  You also need to carefully cut probes that will stick up from the board into the pipe caps.  Once the board is built tuning the pipe caps can be tricky.   I have a spectrum analyzer that I can bring to the group build if anyone needs to tune their pipe caps.   Note:  building the higher band transverters will take a longer time and will also involve building a multiplier board for 5760 or 10368 as the ADF4350 synthesizer does not go that high..  This was one of the reasons we thought most people would want to start on bands where there is more activity and the build is less complicated.

If you are interested in a higher band there are people available to assist as needed.

Here was the post sent by N6IZW to the members of the San Diego Microwave Society:

Hi all,
Here is an estimate I put together of the cost to build the various W1GHZ basic transverter projects.
The bottom line includes a 10 MHz TCXO ( I will supply), PLL Local oscillator, LO multiplier (10Ghz & 5.7GHz) and transverter.
So the bottom line is about :
10 Ghz - $96.25
5.7GHz - $73.30
2.3 or 3.5GHz - $55

Not  free but  cheaper than most any other approach I see out there.

The anticipated time for the group build is still planned to be in the fall.

Good morning Ray,

Please let us know how far in advance we will need to get the parts ordered. I look forward to these builds.
