Hello!

I have some PIV data that I want to process using PIVlab - I am having some challenge with my image formatting. I have taken my images and saved them as a mutliTIFF file where the file fomrat is .tif there are 2,000 images within these files (4kHz capture rate therfore 0.5s of data).

The issue is that, as far as I can tell, that PIVlab only picks up the first image of the multiTiff file, therefore the test condition I am hoping to assess is not possible. Does this mean that I have to split my multiTIFF files into 2,000 separate tif files for me to perform my analysis?

I am sure that there is a simple explanation to my issue. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks, James.

Hi William,

Thanks for your resposne. Seeing as there is no solution just yet, I will try and save the files in a different format. My first port of call is to try and change the multitiff into an mp4 and import the series of images as a video. I am doubtful to have a particuarly sophisticated resolution, however, I will share my findings.

Cheers, James.

Hi, please don't use video Files, they are really unsuitable for any PIV analysis.

Hello William,

Thanks for your advice regarding video format. I have proceeded to develop a matlab script to split multiTIF's into singular TIF files. Please see attached and feel free to share as necessary.

Cheers, James.

Hi Wiiliam
Can you elaborate on how/why video files are unsuitable for PIV analysis? I am also surprised since there is a video input file option in  PIVlab.
Thanks,
Aviv

Hi,
mainly because people that use video files don't care about topics like compression, true framerates etc. This generates a lot of support overhead for me. Uncompressed or lossless video files may be suitable, but there are hardly any devices that encode properly. And it is also more difficult to access frames from a video file than to read individual image files in Matlab.

Thanks for the clarification William.
