2010 Million-Tree Challenge Team

Proposal:
Potential global call for action - to be in line with World Forest day or separate Global Call for Action with message/strategy

This is just a meet-and-greet and sharing with you all what everyone's thoughts on this potential Million-Tree-Campaign global collaborative effort. A list of people who want to be involve/ will show support in challenge & call for action.

As you all are aware, Luntiang Pilipinas & Philippine Youth Climate Movement are planning to launch our 1-Million-Tree Campaign on World Forest Day, March 21. I've nudged you all on potential of campaign becoming a global-collaborative team effort. So far on this list, 9 countries & youth networks who have shown interest in getting involved for potential of an global eco-aligned action. Since some organizations in this team are already planning a tree-campaign in different times of the year -- it would only make sense to collaborate. With that said, also wanted to bring out the potential of campaign having a message/strategy-- Any ideas? (i.e. each tree planted will be an ode to a victim of climate change, etc.-- just an idea!!)

MALAYSIA: Matthias Gelber, founder of Eco-Warriors Malaysia-/Greenest Man on Planet awardee
matthia...@gmail.com / http://greenmanplanet.blogspot.com/

"Most likely we will have a tree planting on March 20 in the peat swamp and 21st in inner city are of Kuala Lumpur .... I am cooking things up here for the world forest day. There is a good chance that we will have two tree planting events here that time."

UK: Andy Steel- Founder of PATT (Plant A Tree Today) Foundation

"I have a client that will pay for trees in Manilla. It will be around 5000 -10,000 trees - they are looking for a site close to Manila if possible so that they can get staff involved.  I need a proposal on costs and proposed dates. The brief I have for the client is to put together 5000 tree programes in 5 countries - its for a major bank. The bank is starting an initiative to offset emnissions from their flights as part of a CSR campaign. We need planting times/dates - working with the climate to ensure best survival chances etc"

NEPAL: Avishek Shrestha, founder of Nepalese Youth Climate Action

'I will share with friends from youth network form south Asia about the program."

SINGAPORE: Wilson Ang, Founder of Eco-Singapore
"Well...we can moblize thailand too and indo but impt thing here is what is the key message? What do u want to achieve out of this? Strategically...the mesage..what do we want to show is impt."

BANGLADESH: Rawan Nabim, Founder of Bangladesh Youth in Action on Climate

INDIA: Deepa Gupta & Caroline Howe, founder of Indian Youth Climate Network

"We've put it forward to the IYCN steering committee. IYCN has already taken on many projects nationally for 2010, so I'm not sure at the likelihood of us taking this on as an official national campaign. However we can encourage all our regional chapters and partner organisations to participate."

Ashutosh SahuIndian youth group called DIYA which has chapters across India

"They're planning this year to do a massive tree plantation as they now have a lot of enthusiastic volunteers. However they were thinking of doing the plantation around the July period."
"We would also look for all bodies involved in environment activities to come together and join hands to make this a really impact oriented activity. This will also help organisations/youth bodies come closer to eachother. Any help in getting contacts who can help in arranging cheaper saplings, giving area for plantation etc.. would be highly appreciated."

AUSTRALIA: Anna Rose- Founder of Australian Youth Climate Coalition
We've already planned our work for the first half of the year and unfortunately won't have capacity to take on this project - but what we can do is help promote what you're doing through our website and online supporters.

US: Anna C. Keenan- 'International' climate activist, voluntarily supporting the international youth climate movement the last few years
"I won't have capacity to join a team for it this year, i'm already going to be heaps busy, but I love the concept and would be happy to share it around my networks to promote it."

KENYA:  Modrine Alumasa Sabwa Founder of Youth of Africa Initiative in Peace & Climate Change
"My organization is capable to do this. We have already done tree-planting activities here in Kenya."

I'd like to introduce you all to the Philippine Team making the 1 M tree challenge happen:
(My apologies-- Please bare with us, as we humbly introduce ourselves as we only started over three weeks ago :) http://philycm.wordpress.com/ )

Nelson Enojo, Community Organizer for Restore Green Movement

We can do this. We need only 100 schools to put up a tree-plant nursery at 10,000 capacity. The experiment with our Tomas Oppus Pilot School can produce 90,000 yearly production with the 600 sqm area. Another is the 19 municipalities of Southern Leyte. The only obstacle is planting an average of 10,000 a month. Maybe we can suggest to congressman Mercado, as chairman on the committee on public works to make this national. Incorporate tree planting as an activity for all DPWH personnel nation wide. Only a suggestion. Thank you. or maybe create a competition "RGM Search for Green Schools & Communities" much cheaper budget lowering cost up to prize money only. Again, only suggestion.

Ernie Rojo- Chairman of Clean Up Dipolog (Green Youth NGO)
One more thing, I have talked with a fellow officemate in the Boy Scouts of the Philippines-National Office (I worked with them for 7 years) if he can be tapped to coordinate participation of BSP. He obliged but would need to be briefed of what he is to do. We can ask his help to persuade BSP national leadership to join PhilYCM, esp. in our 1M Tree target for March 21. All they need to do is issue a National Memorandum to all Local Councils of BSP enjoining everyone to participate. Then our coordinators in every city/province/region will then coordinate with the BSP leadership in their respective areas to give them information on the details of the local activity.

Ronz Epiz, Chairman of Sangguniang Kabataan (SK Federation)-

Has already launched the 1-Million tree campaign in Souther Leyte! Pictures here: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=146436&id=722418233

Jan. 30, 2010, less than a week after Ronz Epiz, Chairman of the SK Federation lobby & challenged local leaders to commit, pledge & lead the "2010: PLANT A MILLION TREES CAMPAIGN" All she has to say, qoute "We just had a well-attended forum this morning with regards to the 2010: Plant A Million Tree Campaign. We challenge our local leaders and everyone gathered to express their pledges of commitments to support our project. She is focusing on the making of the proposal: Building-up youth empowerment to pledge commitment to the 2010: Plant a Million Trees Challenge.
Emerilyn Suraya- Founder of Contact Philippines

This project idea started on just a conversation between Matthias Gelber (http://greenmanplanet.blogspot.com/) and I in the beginning of the year- and a few exchanges on facebook. Just looking at possibilities of collaboration for action-- though obviously need more brilliant minds in giving the potential of a project like this more depth/ clarity / stronger voice.

Anyway, here's a happy tune to help you start  your week: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqZ5brcD4VY&feature=related. If you don't mind, I've also attached a picture of my 4-yr-old daughter, my 5-yr-old sister, & 6-yr-old cousin planting trees 2 weeks ago. My younger siblings & I decided to give/plant trees instead of giving gifts for Christmas.

With Love,

E
